OCONOMOWOC – One of the most important things to remember about lawn and garden equipment is that they are very similar to automobiles; in the fact that they require maintenance to function properly, said Andy Flint, service manager at Proven Power, Inc. in Oconomowoc. "Most spring headaches can be prevented through yearly maintenance," he said. "One of the largest mistakes that customers make regarding their machinery and equipment is not maintaining the equipment, maintenance can help pre- vent expensive repairs in the future." The engine oil is the lifeblood of lawn and garden equipment, and should be monitored regularly and changed yearly, or approximately after 50 hours of usage in normal conditions, Flint said. " The air filter should also be replaced every year, to allow the engine to breath properly," he explained. "Maintaining a sharp mower blade is also important to prevent grass from being torn or ripped, rather than being cut properly." Flint said fuel quality is also a concern with the modern reformulated gasoline found at the pumps. Flint explained that most modern small engine manufacturers consider any fuel over 30 days old stale. "Fuel stabilizers, such as SeaFoam, can be used to prevent the onset of fuel breakdown, but only extend the fuel life 15 to 30 days," he said.
