APRIL 2013 Page 6A • Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove UWW class takes students to antique hotbed in Indiana Submitted photo An auctioneer runs an auction at Shipshewana, Ind., in this undated photo. Local antiques expert Barbara Eash is teaching a class at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha that will visit Shipshewana, which includes a weekly antiques auction in the heart of Indiana's Amish country, June 4-5. Introduction to the World of Antiques is the continuing education class that I teach at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha campus. When I was asked to host an educational road trip with an antiques destination, I couldn't wait to suggest Shipshewana! The population of this small town in LaGrange County, Ind., numbered 658 in the 2010 census. It lies in the middle of Amish country, where your backyard is your neighbor's farm. This will not be just a road trip, this experience places you in a living classroom. The "Community of Antiques Tour" starts out with a class at the UWW campus the night before, to learn what to expect and meet other travelers. Coach transportation leaves early Tuesday, June 4 and returns late June 5. Amish culture is at every turn; you will be amazed how semitrailer trucks share the highway with horse-drawn vehicles. We may be fortunate to pass a barn-raising or see teams of horses working in the fields. Our meals will be at Das Dutchman Essenhaus Inn & Restaurant in Middlebury, Ind., with only 30 pie choices! Shipshewana is well-known for a weekly antiques auction, running eight rings simultaneously, selling over 1,700 items in five hours. It is an unbelievable experience of sound and movement! On the same grounds is the Midwest's largest flea market. Another must see is Yoder Department Store, with a mega-variety of fabric, excellent shoes and clothing. Some may choose to observe the bidding at the livestock auction. There are choices galore, with many offerings of 231349002 Lynne & Jim Knurr #2 Agent 2010 Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, WI G.M. & The Coach 414-350-8345 www.lynneandjim.com lynne.knurr@cbexchange.com examples of serious and whimsical themes. Vintage postcards like this one can still be found What's the worth of a at relatively inexpensive prices. great antiques destination? Priceless. The vanishing postcard In 1873, the U.S. Post Office issued its first penny postcard. In a short time, manufacturers sold postcards of high-quality color that represented every aspect of life. One penny could transport you to another land, have an outlet to express friendship or share a celebration. Striking illustrations were produced at the height of postcard craze from 1905 to 1911. Publishers promoted the Easter custom with traditional religious-themed cards that were purchased and exchanged by the thousands. Cards were printed with messages in English, French or German. Egg baskets, springtime rebirth and eternal renewal of the cross were images usually featured. No generation is immune to their charm. Collectors search out Have an item for appraisal?
