Special speaker Sunday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. Paul Kire- ma is director of Centerwill Ministries (ministering to widows and orphans) in Me- ru, Kenya. What kind of Christian are we? Are we the kind of Chris- tian who feels that we've ac- complished our calling just by attending church ser- vice? Maybe we go a step beyond this level and volun- teer to those less fortunate. Are we the type of Christian that is okay with doing what God asks us to do as long as it doesn't interfere with our personal schedule or com- fort? When we look at those mentioned in the Bible, we see Christ followers who gave up home and family to follow God's calling on their lives. (Abraham and Sarah). We see people who were thrown into the most dif- ficult circumstances ( Jo- seph and Paul just to name a few), but they continued to trust God with their lives and God, who is faithful and trustworthy, brought them to places of victory in their lives and ministry. If our fo- cus is on our feelings, our comfort, or on ourselves in any way, we are setting our- selves up for possible fail- ure. We must be so focused on God and His mission for us that we don't get discour- aged, upset, or distracted by the devices of the enemy. We can't allow offense to sepa- rate us from our fellow labor- ers. We must be determined that no matter what comes, we will trust God with our lives, our family, our minis- try, and our finances. Tim Hamaker and the singers will be James Kahler family. "For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us" (II Corinthi- ans 1:20). How can I know that some, if not all the promises made to specific people, apply to me? The promise to Abram and Sarai when old does not apply to me. Some promises are clearly given to all people because of the way they are stated. "Come unto me, all ye that labor..." Some promises are understood to be uni- versal because they are a display of the nature of God. We must be selective when considering promises. Ask the following questions: To whom was this promise orig- inally given? Is it confined to the person to whom it was di- rected? Does the nature of God demand that this prom- ise be universal in scope? Will I do damage to the con- text if I apply this promise to myself? God's promises are sure and faithful. They are mighty, unfailing, sover- eign, irrevocable, and eter- nal. What He has promised, He is able to perform. His times were deeply trou- bling as the nation faced en- emies within and without, plus a divided political and religious leadership split- ting the people into warring opposing camps. The nation of Judah was a house divided against itself with major military powers coming in war against it. Can you see parallels for us? The pierced marks through his hands and feet and the hollow in his side reveal a story of pain inflicted, en- dured and then healed—for us. He did it so that we might be restored to him and made hole. Jesus, how I love the story Your scars tell to me—and to our world. May I learn to love You more and more through the story of Your scars. So many trials come in- to our lives and along with the business of life. These things can easily choke out the Life of God in us.
