Winslow Patoka River is halfway filled or halfway empty depending on your preference, but with only one eve- ning of rain, the river hasn't changed much. The fall season is here and so is the winter-like temps of 30s to the 20s, and the daytime temps have been fall- like in the 70s, but when it drops into the 50s, it's a bit chilly. When you leave the house in the morning, you need a jacket, and when the evening arrives, you need that heavy jacket or coat. The trees in the area are changing to those colorful colors in the woods and along the highways, like 61, 57 and 64. Some areas have all the colors of yel- low, purple, red, rust, green and or- ange, then in some other areas, there are no color changes. I hope you look out your window and see the colors in your yard. Speaking of yards, I had my house plants under a tree for shade and then we had the threat of frost or real- ly cold temps, so Norm and I brought them in the house. I had to find a spot for all of them. I need more light sourc- es (windows), but I believe they are be- ginning to like the warmer temps in- side. Our squirrel had a walnut in his mouth as he carried it to the tree out- side the kitchen window. Then anoth- er day, he was chattering at something and it could have been that he saw me in the front room window. One night, the doge was barking really bad, so I got the flashlight and lit up a deer across the road that had a black and white cat at bay. Then the deer looked at me and the cat could run past the deer, but the deer didn't run away. He just stood there and didn't move for a few minutes. He then decided to mosey over to another area and began graz- ing on the field grasses. I went back in- side for a while and decided to check on the deer again he was still grazing, but closer to the road and the rest of the night was quiet. I believe this might be the same young fawn we had seen early in the summer when Mom was here for a visit. While we were on the roads on 57, we saw a family of skeleton zombies and in Princeton, a skeleton on a motorcycle, not to mention, seeing all the beautiful decorations of bats, ghosts, scarecrows, pumpkins, cats, Franken- stein and more Halloween for all to enjoy. Norm is now working for the Town of Winslow every day instead of a few days a week. This week, you could have seen him and Nathan in a storm drain. In the town newsletter, that you can pick up each month at the Town Hall, there will be the 2nd Annual Coat Wrap, where if you have a clean, gen- tly used coat you would like to donate, you can drop it off at the Corner Book Shoppe. When it's time to do the coat wrap, they will be on sign posts, light poles or draped on benches. If you are in need of a coat, you can simply take one. This was so cool to see the coats, scarves and hats all through town last year, and they were needed by many stars. I know the FCC is just trying to do their job and I guess it may work out for them, but when you are in an area where even an antenna only gives you one channel, you don't want to lose it. So at 10 a.m. on October 15, we lost ev- ery channel we used to have and the one channel we were watching went off the air. So, I tried all day and part of the evening to scan in to get our PBS station back on. Then finally around 10 p.m. or later, it scanned into the T V and now we can watch at least one channel, but that is okay, because you learn a lot from a PBS program and the kids' shows are informative also. Then, you learn new recipes on all those cook- ing shows. Now, we have to wait until all the leaves are off the trees to scan the channels again and maybe our 44 and 7 will again appear in the scan- ning through the winter. I hope those who have an antenna were okay when you scanned in your channels and you got all of your channels back. We re- ally don't want to pay for cable use when the antenna was working before the changes, but we haven't made the decision, and maybe even cable won't work in our area of town. Halloween is in a week, so to all the kids who dress up and go door to door for your treats, be careful and walk with an adult or guardian and most of all, have loads of fun. As the lights begin to dim on this week, keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and see all the changing colors in your area. Stop for all school buses and always smile, wave and say hi to everyone you see this week. "Happy Halloween."
