B-2 Sports Wednesday, October 23, 2019 The Press-Dispatch By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net A season with high hopes turned out to be anything but for the Pike Central vol- leyball team. The Chargers concluded its season 4-23 af- ter a 3-0 loss to Sullivan in the semifinals of Sectional 31 Tournament at Vincennes Lincoln on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Golden Arrows (21-12, 3-2 Western Indi- ana-West) defeated the Chargers 25 -21, 25 -20 and 25 -11. It was the second con- secutive year Sullivan elimi- nated Pike Central from the postseason. "Going in to the match, we kind of had an idea of what Sullivan was capable of and who their big hitters were based on our match-up with them last year," Pike Central head coach Brandi Chest- nut said. "We got game film from another team, watched it, and realized that we had a good shot to beat them if we served aggressively and smart at them. We switched our rotation around so that when their big hitter, Asia Povlin, was in the front row, we had a big double block to help block her or to just slow the ball down so that we could get a dig up. Which worked really well." However, Povlin started to take her hits over the block- ers once she was blocked a couple of times by Erika Vinnedge and Karsyn Pipes, but Pike Central still did a good job of getting under the ball. The majority of the Char- gers' points came from the service line. "We would serve them short a few, make them ad- just in and then serve the back corners and they would shank the pass," Chestnut said. "Overall, I am very proud of how the team played. We had a rough season, and the girls could have decided to let Sullivan walk out with an easy win, but they didn't. Those girls played some of the best vol- leyball I have seen them play. It was a true testament to their competitive side and will to win." The team will lose Aubrie Dawson, Lily Fredrick-Rice, Audrey Keepes, Pipes and Emma Russell to gradua- tion, but returns seven ris- ing seniors. "I want to thank the se- niors for their six to seven years of hard work for this program," Chestnut said. "The underclassmen are go- ing to have some big shoes to fill." Another big one Elias Ambrose, of Princeton, went fishing with his grandfather, James Clark, of Spurgeon, on Sept. 19. Ambrose caught another big bass, which was 21 inches long, in Pike County. finding a way to keep get- ting better even when he couldn't run. I really feel like he would be racing this week if he had been healthy all year, but some- times life doesn't work that way and he is taking it in stride. "Peyton Chanley had a huge year for not even knowing that he would even want to run cross country until school al - ready started. He really grew into the sport and ex- ceeded expectations. He has a bright future ahead of him now that he knows he wants to succeed in this sport." "A lot changes when you have one big team instead of two smaller ones," Fro- derman said. "We were able to move some guys around to get guys breaks on spe- cial teams that wouldn't nor- mally come off the field if it were a normal game. I was very happy that everyone was able to see the field. I felt like we had a lot of great in- dividual performances with some of our younger guys stepping into roles to help the team." The Chargers' offense, led by Quade Morton, Ju- lian Gish and Arri McDon- ald, had another impressive game. The offense convert- ed three-of-five drives for touchdowns. The Pike Central teams will play another combined game on the road in their regular season finale at Tell City on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Pike Central volleyball season ends in sectional Pike Central gets rematch with Brown County in sectional By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central will host its sectional first round oppo- nent for the first time since 2011. It was announced during the 47th annual IHSA A Foot- ball State Tournament Pair- ing Show on Sunday, Oct. 13. Pike Central will host Brown County (3-5, 1-3 Western Indiana–East) in a rematch from week one, where the Eagles defeated the Chargers 41-19. "I am ecstatic," Pike Cen- tral head coach Dave Ste- phens said. "The fact that we get to be home for sectionals and play tournament football in front of our fans is amaz- ing. I know how difficult that two-plus-hour drive can be." Brown County has thrown the ball about three times as much as its ran it this sea- son. Quarterback Noah Carter picked the Chargers apart in their first match-up. He went 16 -of-19 for 223 yards with three touchdowns and no in- terceptions. He's completed 108 -of-182 pass attempts for 1,447 yards with 10 touch- downs and nine intercep- tions total this season. He's also the team's second-lead- ing rusher with 140 yards and two touchdowns on 29 attempts. "I think they are in a more difficult position than us," Stephens said. "When you're in a spot where you have had success and did well, now you're trying to figure what do I need to do. It's differ- ent for us because we under- stand that we came up short from what we wanted to do. So now we have the ability to tweak the things that we need to tweak. I think there is some advantage to being in the position that we are and having the opportunity to right the wrongs from the first game." The Pike Central-Brown County winner will face the winner of Sullivan (5 -3, 3-2 Western Indiana–West) at Vincennes Lincoln (4-4, 2-3 Big Eight). On the other side of the bracket, its Edgewood (6 -2, 3-1 Western Indiana– East) at Washington (0 -8, 0 - 5 Big Eight) and Princeton (1-7, 1-4 Big Eight) at Owen Valley (1-7, 1-3 Western Indi- ana–East). "Some of our girls won some battles against girls that were running a minute plus faster than them earli- er in the year," Roach said. "It shows that they have a bright future. Our message to them after the race was to want it everyday as bad as they wanted it today. Ev- eryone is going to have days where it's hard to give 100 percent. On those days, call back on this feeling. If they want it this bad everyday, they can be really special next year." Evansville Memorial's Al- li Morphew won the race in 19:17.
