Submit and Resist Even though these two words are complete oppo- sites of each other, they combine to form one of the most powerful scriptures in the Bible. By understanding and putting into practice this scripture, we gain freedom. Freedom from the enemy's power plays. Freedom from his lies and devices. All of the freedom that Jesus died to give us. "Submit (accept or yield to a superior force or to the authority of another) your- selves, then, to God. Resist (to withstand the action or effect of ) the devil, and he will flee from you (Freedom) ( James 4:7). If you will continually sub- mit your ways to God's ways and resist the voice and tac- tics of the enemy, you will see breakthrough in your life. Freedom like you've never experienced before. And then the intimate rela- tionship with our Creator that we desire follows in the next verse. "Come near to God and He will come near to you" ( James 4:8). Paul's exhortations to Timothy stand as timeless words of advice to every ser- vant of the living God. "Exercise thyself rather unto godliness." The apos- tle drew a parallel between an athlete preparing for the Greek games and a believer pursuing godliness. "Be thou an example of the believers." God wants us to be living proof of His pow- er by our example. We may be the only Bible some peo- ple read. "Neglect not the gift that is in thee." When we get saved, God gives us spiritual gifts, but they must then be devel- oped. God directs us to use these gifts for His glory. He honors a beautiful blend of gift and grit. He gives the gift, we supply the grit to use it effectively. Chad Searls, Pastor Lutheran ST. JOHN'S LUTHER AN CHURCH 6483 W. 580 N. So many trials come in- to our lives and along with the business of life. These things can easily choke out the Life of God in us. There were those who were envious of him. There were those who misunder- stood him. There were those who revered him. When we are facing trials we don't always understand why God leads us in this direction, but we have to have faith and fol- low Christ, no matter what we face. Sometimes we don't see the answer or any- way out of this trial, but if we will turn all of it over to God, He will lead us. It's hard to have faith during difficult time, but God says, ask and you shall receive. The two hardest tests on the spiritual road are the pa- tience to wait for the right moment and the courage not to be disappointed with what we encounter. Nobody is exempt from the trials of life, but every- one can always find some- thing positive in everything even in the worst of times. "Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you" (Mat- thew 7:7). We invite all of you to come and worship with us. Roy Stilwell, Pastor Pam Lemond, Reporter
