PCHS FALLS TO HATCHETS Pike Central lost 3-0 to Washington (3-0) on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at PCHS. The Chargers played well in the first set and narrow- ly lost 25 -22. The Hatchets easily won the second set 25 - 11, and held off a late push to win the third and final set 25 -17. Keepes led the team with seven kills, two aces, eight digs and two assists. Powell had 13 assists, six digs, one block, one ace and four kills. Pike Central's other lead- ers were: Frederick-Rice (three kills and three digs), Pipes (three kills, six digs and one assist), Vinnedge (two kills, one ace and one dig), Shoultz (two kills), Rus- sell (one ace and one assist), Johnson (seven digs and sev- en digs), Dawson (five digs and one assist), Willis (two digs) and juniors Neeley Correll (four digs) and Ri- ley Morgan (one ace). CHARGERS LOSE HOME-OPENER Pike Central also lost its home-opener, 3-0, to Vin- cennes Lincoln (6 -0) on Tuesday, Aug. 20. The Alices won the first set 25 -16. The Chargers bat- tled back and fought hard in the second set before ul- timately losing 25 -23. Vin- cennes Lincoln cruised to a 25 -11 win in the third and fi- nal set. "The girls started out strong in the first set against Vincennes, but Vincennes edged us out," Chestnut said. "I feel our second set was played much more ag- gressively, finding the avail- able openings in their de- fense and also just attack- ing the ball more. The third set, I believe fatigue started to set in and become a factor. All in all, I was pleased with their play." Dawson led the team with four kills, two aces and five digs. Pike Central's other lead- ers were: Vinnedge (two kills, one block, one assist and one dig), Shoultz (two kills, one ace and one dig), Pipes (two kills, one ace, seven digs and one assist), Keepes (two kills, 11 digs and one assist), Powell (one kill, two aces, seven digs and 11 assists), Willis (one kill and three digs), John- son (six digs) and Russell (one dig). Pike Central is sched- uled to host Loogootee (2- 0) on Thursday, Aug. 29. CHARGERS FRY WARRIORS Pike Central was abso- lutely dominate in its sea- son-opener at North Knox (0 -2) on Wednesday, Aug. 21. The Chargers disman- tled the Warriors, 8 -0. "We started kind of sluggish and nobody scored until about half- way through the first half," Western said. "We played better in the second half, and had a lot of chances." Roy and Vaughn each finished the game with three goals and two as- sists. Thompson had a goal and an assist. Senior Mor- gan Houchins also scored a goal and Willis had an as- sist. Roy, Houchins, Vaughn, Willis and junior Halli Fair kept a lot of pressure on the North Knox defense. "Our middle and wing backs of Lauren Young, Kabrick and (freshman) Kahle Young played very well and kept North Knox from getting many chanc- es," he said. "And our de- fense of (sophomore) Han- nah Woodford, Ashley and (freshman) Keena Young were solid and helped big in the shutout." Horrall had one save and played the first 55 min- utes in goal. Kahle Young played the final 25 score- less minutes. "We had girls that came in and played very well in several different spots," Western added. "Cape- hart, and sophomores Abigail Skelton and Al- li Holder all played a few spots and were a big help in any spot we put them in. (Freshman) Jasmine Leighty came in and played well as a defensive back, and Thompson came in and played both offense and defense all over the field." Pike Central was sched- uled to host Tell City (0 -1) on Monday, Aug. 19, but the game was canceled due to inclement weather. No makeup date has been set. The team traveled to Washington Catholic (0 - 1) on Tuesday, Aug. 27. The Lady Chargers will al- so travel to Evansville Day School (1-0) on Thursday, Aug. 29. Pike Central lost its final game of the tournament on Saturday afternoon against Somerset Christian (Ky.), 1-0. "We gave up a goal five minutes into the game and then settled in and outplayed them for most of the game," Western said. "Unfortunate- ly, we were unable to put one in the back of the net." Somerset Christian fin- ished the tournament 2-0. "I loved the way we bat- tled all game and hope- fully we can learn from it," Western said. "It was a long weekend, playing three games in two days. But I think we got better because of it." Whann made seven saves in goal for the Char- gers. Pike Central was sched- uled to host Tell City (2-0) on Tuesday, Aug. 20 and Mount Vernon (0 -1) on Monday, Aug. 26, but both games were canceled due to inclement weather. The team was scheduled to play at Washington Cath- olic (1-0) on Tuesday, Aug. 27 and will travel to Evans- ville Day School on Thurs- day, Aug. 29. The team isn't sched- uled to compete again un- til they host North Posey and Gibson Southern at Prides Creek on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
