By Janice Barniak Karen Eubanks, Toyo- ta Boshoku Indiana team captain, was confident their group would meet their goal Saturday at Gibson County's Relay for Life. "We'll bug enough peo- ple, and keep bugging them. We'll get it," she said, as the group serving cotton can- dy and drinks was just a few hundred from their $20,000 goal. Overall, optimism led the day as groups vaulted over the county's $72,465 goal to hit right around $ 86,000, said Director Ry- an Bixler-Rigg, who added there were still a few pend- ing fundraisers that needed to wrap up for the final total. More than $ 68,000 was raised prior to the day in pancake breakfasts, chi- li suppers and more pro- grams. "This community does such a good job. There was such good support at Bo- shoku, they're one of the top teams, and the Beadle Bunch they raised more than $18,000," he said. "It's so special that the commu- nity gets behind it and sup- ports it." Last year, Relay for Life ended with around $ 80,000 raised. Bixler Rigg said some of what was accomplished with that money included getting 44 residents, who are can- cer patients, 85 programs and services, including 36 rides to cancer treatment through the Road to Recov- ery program. He added, drivers who want to help with that pro- gram can volunteer by call- ing 812-455 -8624. He got off to a strong start with a birdie on the par 5 first hole. His bogey on the number one handicap hole three put him back at even par. He then bogeyed the fourth hole before parring his way through the rest of the front nine for a 36. On the back nine, he birdied the 11th hole and the 15th, but had two birdies to finish even par on the back nine for a 71. Wood's number two Pax- ton Schwomeyer shot a 77. He also started off with a birdie on the first hole and then bogeyed three like Creedon. He finished the front nine at 37. His back nine was solid, other than a double bogey on hole 15. Travis Bottoms' 94 rounded out the scoring for the Trojans to give them a 323. Justin Stricklin had a 95. "We knew we were go- ing to be good," said Trojan coach Jeff Tooley. "Our four and five players are our most important, be- cause we have a very strong one and two, and our third player is consistent. So we live and die by our four and five," said Tooley. The Trojans have com- piled a 35 -3 record over the last two seasons. One of their losses was when Schwomeyer self-report- ed he played the wrong ball, when he found his ball while walking home after the match.
