Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598 had no postcards or notes this week. We have a large mailbox to hold lots of postcards from everywhere. Winslow Patoka River should be rising to the overflow mark since we have had lots to loads of rain and severe storms this past week. The temps have been in the 90s only to drop into the 80s, and the nighttime temps were in the 70s, but dropping into the 60s. The bloodsucking var- mints (mosquitoes) are still out in force and with all this rain, they are out all day long. The black flies and gnats can leave us alone and the hu- midity can come down a bit. Lately, it has felt like summer but it's still spring until June 21, then the hot weather really begins. I have a dogwood tree that I or we planted about three years ago and it finally got some white blooms only on the top of the tree. Ted, Terri Ann, Mom, Norm and I went out Sunday to decorate our loved ones' graves for Memorial Day at Sunset, Williams and Francis- co cemeteries, where not too many were out, but the humidity was high and the mosquitoes loved the damp grass. We drove through the Oak- land City Junction, where the signal lights were out, but the stop and go of every vehicle was like clockwork. Winslow held their 12th Memorial Day Parade and service at Oak Hill Cemetery, where the parade vehicles were low in number and so were the stars who looked on as we all hon- ored our fallen who gave their lives for our freedom. Our speaker was Roy Henderson, who spoke from his heart on our fallen loved ones and this year, Roy and Lance Corporal Dylan Jones and Sgt. Dan Hulbert helped as Roy talked and explained what each item on the Remembrance Table stood for. I had not had the pleasure to see the Remembrance Table and how each item plays a role in our fallen loved ones as an honor to them. There was a song played called "The Angel Flight" and at the end of the service, "Taps" were played by the Winslow American Legion Col- or Guard. Our three service guys rode in the fire truck from Winslow. Ray Brooks led the parade with the color guard, the Nation- al Guard sent us a Hum- mer. There was a 1940 Chevrolet of Ronnie Wells, a 1937 Dodge ho- trod of Chuck and Stacy McCandless, Winslow Lions Club of Mike, Lu- cy, Leroy, Winslow fire truck, Spurgeon fire truck, Petersburg fire truck and a Patoka Twp. fire truck. Norm and I, and Melvin and Steve blocked the roads. The pastor of the Winslow General Baptist Church Gary Watson said the prayer. Norm and I would like to thank ev- eryone who came out on this day of honor and to those who helped with what we needed on the stage and with seating. The cabin has a new or I should say a recycled backporch that Ram- bo and a friend helped bring. The five holes had been already dug out and when the porch was finally set in those holes, we had them mea- sured correctly. We only had to dig out some more dirt from the back so the door could open onto the porch. The steps are also attached and two chairs are sitting on it. It's so nice to see the area from a needed porch. Norm did all the leveling that was needed, but I helped out to attach the steps. Last Thursday, Friday and Sat- urday was the Pike County Spring Clean-up and around Winslow, we saw several yards with items to be hauled off sitting at the curb. It al- ways rains each year and this year, it rained on Thursday so the pick- ups were wet and so were the land- fill roads. Winslow town workers, on Thursday and Friday, collected 23 dump truck loads, and Freedom and Fire Church collected four loads in the town limits. Have you looked out your window and seen the snowflakes blow? We have and the snowflakes are called cotton from the Cottonwood trees. The mulberries are going to be ripe enough to eat pretty soon if the birds don't get them first. I heard on the sports that the St. Louis Blues hockey team is in the Stanley Cup playoffs. I hope they win it all this year. I can't think of anything else to ramble on about, so as the lights be- gin to dim, please keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and see all the beauty around your area, and always smile, wave and say Hi to everyone you see this week.
