Stam Continued on page 2 The Power of the Cross Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Since the days of Christ's crucifixion, the cross has been the symbol of Christianity. Christians have always looked to the Cross as a reminder of the price Christ paid for our salvation. The famous evangelist, Billy Graham, often reminded pastors to preach about the Cross. The true meaning of the Cross is that all people who believe in re- demption through the Cross have eternal life. It is sad to see many churches today with- out a Cross. In an effort to offend no one and fit in with our politically correct culture the Cross has been removed. Christ died on the Cross for the sins of the whole world. There would be no Easter without the Cross. It is a fact that, around the world, more people recognize the golden arches of Mc- Donald's and the Shell Oil Company logo more than the meaning of the Cross. Ac- cording to a survey of people in Australia, Germany, India, Ja- pan, the United King- dom and the United States, these com- mercial symbols are better known than the Cross represent- ing Christianity. The most widely recog- nized symbol in these six countries was the five linked rings of the Olympics by 92 % of respondents. In con- trast, 88 % identified the McDonald's arches and Shell's seashell logo. Only 54% identi- fied the Cross as the symbol of Christianity. We need more pastors who, like Paul of the New Testament, will say, "I am not ashamed of the Cross of Christ." There is a strange and wonderful power when the true meaning of the Cross is preached. In Romans 5:12 God tells us how we are all related to the first man, Adam: "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin… so death passed upon all men…" This verse clearly indicates that every child born into the world since Adam has partaken of Adam's sinful nature. Parents sometimes wonder why their children act as they do. The answer is sim- ple! Every child is related to rebellious Ad- am by physical birth, and soon rebels like Adam, whose offspring he is. In Scripture we are told that God "com- mendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Rom. 5:8). When you are in trouble and someone comes to your aid, are you not automati- cally drawn to that person? Should we not then be attracted to the One who cared so much for us that He "made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedi- ent unto death, even the death of the cross" (Phil. 2:7,8)? Through natural birth we partake of the sinful natures of our parents back to Adam, and frequently we even have the same phys- ical features as our parents. How touching, then, to know that the Lord Jesus Christ took on Him "the likeness of men" (apart from sin) and, as the God-man, died for our sins upon the cross, where sinful men (peo- ple like us) nailed Him! As we recognize this and place our faith in Him, a spiritual birth takes place and we become the chil- dren of God ( John 1:12). More than this, we become members of the Body of Christ, God's new creation, for "if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation" (II Cor. 5:17). "created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained, that we should walk in them" (Eph. 2:10). It's time to write my Ramblings again and it seems like yesterday I was writing last week's article. I can't complain about being so busy this week, but with the rain we were able to work in our attic and toss some things we will never use. I think it is amazing how much stuff an attic can have in it. It's like everything else we own it's too good to throw away but ratty enough not to have friends look at it. I told one of my friends the other they were at Sanford and Son junk yard. One of these days I will have it straightened up. Have you been to Evansville lately? It has been awhile for my wife and I. Just as we think we know how to get where we're go- ing, they throw up a road block. Is this how our summer is going to go? Road work everywhere but here I go lead- ing the ones who gripe about the closed roads but also gripe when the roads are so rough. I'm sorry but we just can't have it See R AMBLINGS on 3 Gentle Shepherd hosts guest speaker from Kenya The Gentle Shepherd Church of God will be host Vicki, of the Victorious Chil- dren's Home, in Kenya, A fri- ca, on Thursday, May 9 at 6 p.m. CDT.
