Hutchinson follows dream to teach at OCE By Kenzie Rudolph Brittany Hutchinson, a second grade teacher at Oakland City Elementa- ry, lives with her husband, Jeff, and four children, Ke- gan, Keeli, Kynedi and Kasyn, in Oakland City. Hutchinson attended Oakland City Elementa- ry herself and graduated from Wood Memorial High School in 2005, and then from Oakland City Univer- sity in 2009. She said, "I was a Title I Aide in East Gibson from 2011-2018. I was hired as a sixth grade teacher in Feb- ruary of last year. I loved teaching sixth grade, but I have always wanted to work with younger stu- dents. I was really excit- ed when I heard there was a second grade position open." She said that she loves teaching second grade and added, "The students are starting to become more independent, but they still want to keep you happy. Most of them still love you at this age." Hutchinson said that she spends a lot of time out of the classroom researching different teaching strate- gies and that she is always learning from her students and other teachers as well. She added, "I have cre- ated a classroom that is bright, colorful and wel- coming to students. They sit at tables instead of desks to encourage collaboration and teamwork. I want my students to enjoy coming to school and I hope they are happy to see me everyday. " To make learning fun, Hutchinson has incorpo- rated centers, task cards, and other games and activ- ities. She said that she tries to get the students on their feet and moving as much as possible. She said, "I do not like to sit at a desk all day and I do not expect them to either." One of Hutchinson's goals while at OCE is to continue working with her great team of coworkers to create new and exciting experiences for the Acorn students. Since Hutchinson start- ed college in 2005, her heart was set on teaching at Oakland City Elemen- tary. "I went to school here, my kids go to school here, we are part of the commu- nity. I have been looking forward to teaching in my own classroom here for ma- ny years. My goals are to continue learning ways to use more technology, build good relationships with all my students, and to be- come the best teacher pos- sible," she said.
