The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, May 1, 2019 B- 3 SPORTS BRIEFS Community Dodgeball Tournament A community dodgeball tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 4 at the Blue Jeans Center in Mon- roe City. It is open to school age children through adults. The all-day event will have six-person teams compet- ing in grade levels from kindergarten to adults. It will be limited to 12 teams per age group. Entry fee is $ 6 per per- son. The age groups will start at 9 a.m. with kin- dergarten. They will run one hour each of each grade level for K through 8th grade. Then at 6 p.m., high school and adults will compete. Call Lynette Benton at 217-246 -5051 for more in- formation and to register. Night hike at Patoka River NWR May 18 The Patoka River Na- tional Wildlife Refuge is open from sun up until sundown. However, on May 18, the Refuge of- fice will make an excep- tion and issue a special use permit to allow for a guided night hike on the Refuge in the light of a full moon. The 2.5 -mile hike of moderate difficulty will begin at Boyd's Station at 8 p.m. CDT. Participants need to wear appropriate hiking clothes and shoes, and bring their own flash- lights or headlamps, and insect repellent. The hike is open to all ages, but children must be accom- panied by an adult. The hiking permit is specifi- cally for the guided night hike and no other areas of the Refuge may be ac- cessed on this evening. To get to Boyd's Sta- tion, travel east on SR 64 through Oakland City and look for the large brown Refuge sign indicating a left turn to Snakey Point Marsh at CR 1275. Contin- ue to follow the brown Ref- uge signs until you reach parking lots on both the left and right sides of the road. Boyd's Station is on the left. The hike will be canceled in case of inclem- ent weather. For more in- formation, call 812-457- 4859. PCMS softball teams defeat Forest Park Lexie Onyett would not be denied at the plate when runners were on base on Monday night, driving in five runs on two hits to lead Pike Cen- tral Middle School A team past Forest Park 15 -3. On- yett drove in runs on a homerun in the second in- ning and a double in the fourth. The Lady Chargers opened up scoring in the first inning when an error scored one run. The Char- gers then went on to score eight runs in the fourth inning. The offensive on- slaught came from singles by Tessa Vinnedge, dou- bles by Onyett and Made- lyn Fiscus, and a walk by Delaney Welch. Chloe Williams was the winning pitcher for the Chargers. She pitched two and a third innings, allow- ing zero runs on one hit, striking out four and walk- ing zero. Karley Kavana- ugh threw one and two- thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen. Pike Central socked one homerun on the day when Onyett went deep in the second inning. The Chargers racked up a total of 16 hits for the evening. Williams, Kava- naugh, Vinnedge, Chloe Willis, Macey Stillwell and Onyett all managed multiple hits for Pike Cen- tral. Kavanaugh and Wil- liams each managed three hits to lead the team. Lexie Onyett was bril- liant in the pitcher's mound circle on Monday, as she threw a no-hitter to lead Pike Central Middle School B team past Forest Park 12-0. The Lady Chargers tal- lied five runs in the sec- ond inning. Pike Central's offense in the inning came from singles by Karley Ka- vanaugh and Onyett, and a triple by Macey Stilwell. Onyett was the win- ning pitcher for the Char- gers. She surrendered ze- ro runs on zero hits over three innings, striking out four. Onyett also led the B team with two hits in two at bats. Brandsasse kills 23lb turkey opening day Retired school teacher Marylin Brandsasse killed a 23-pound turkey on opening day of turkey season Wednesday. Brandsasse said she has been turkey hunting since the middle 1970s and this is the largest turkey she has ev- er killed. Middle school boys remain undefeated Pike Central Middle School Track and Field coach Jeremy Howald re- ports that the Monday win over South Spencer and Wood Memorial gave the boys an undefeated season. Coach said, "That was our last regular season meet. The 4x400 meter boys broke the eighth grade school record last night with a time of 3:56.68." Nolan Nelson, Fenn McCrary, Xavi- er Shoultz and Cole Parks set the re- cord and are the same four that also hold the seventh grade record from last year. Coach said, "Our girls' team has had some strong individual performances and is young. Kennedy Willis has set a new school record in the mile this year with a time of 5:54. They show great promise for the next few years." The PCMS girls scored 49 points and were edged out by Wood Memori- al with 53 and South Spencer with 52. The girls' 3200 relay took first in a time of 12:14.28, with the team of Wil- lis, Weisman, Loveless and Thompson. In the 100 hurdles, Sallee was third and Teague fourth. In the 100 m, Kreig was second in 14.43. In the 1600 m, Willis was first in 6:01.83, with Weis- man second in 6:02.9 and Thompson third in 6:46.65. The eighth grade 4x100 ran a 58.78 to second place and was comprised of Kreig, Young, Young and Arteaga. Kreig was second in the 400 m, clock- ing 1:10.53 and Young was third in 1:15.93. Weisman ran a 59.81 to second in the 300 hurdles and Sallee clocked 1:18.18 for fourth. In the 800 run, Willis had a time of 2:47.4 to take first and Thompson ran a 3:00 to second, with Luker fourth in 3:15.16. The 4x400 relay comprised of Young, Young, Thompson and Willis placed first in 5:17.47. Kahle Young was fourth in the long jump (12'9") and Kreig was third in the high jump (4'1"). In the boys' competition, the team of Shoultz, Gladish, Goodrid and Barnett won the 3200 relay in 10 :17.72. P. How- ald was second in the 110 hurdles in 18.56 and B. Howald was third in 19.9. McCrary was third in the 100 (13.0) and Nelson fourth (13.43). In the 1600 m, Shoultz was first in 5:53.71, Barnett third in 6:17.25 and Luff fourth in 6:42.5. The team of Beising, Mann, S. Nel- son and Hammel won the seventh grade 4x100 in 58.15, and the eighth grade 4x100 was second in 52.65 and included Boyd, Chanley, McCrary and P. Howald. Parks won the 400 in 59.1 and N. Nel- son was second in 1:02.03. In the 300 hurdles, P. Howald was second in 50.53 and Hammel third in 51.94. Shoultz won the 800 run in 2:30.21, with Gladish third (2:35.31) and Go- odrid fourth (2:47.53). Chanley took second in the 200 dash in 27.0 The 4x400 team took first in a new school record of 3:56.68 and included McCrary, N. Nelson, Parks and Shoul- tz. In the pole vault, B. Howald was sec- ond at 9'0". Tegmeyer won the long jump, mea- suring 15'2", with Boyd second at 15'0", and Chanley third also at 15'0". In the high jump, P. Howald took second, clearing 5'4". Marchino first took first in the shot put at 34'3", and first in the discus at 87'3", with Speedy fourth at 63'2".
