Lady Chargers take second at the Pioneer Relays By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Freshman pitcher Brynn Hillyard went the distance to lead the Pike Central High School softball team to a 3-2 victory over host Vincennes Lincoln on Monday, April 29. "Brynn pitched real- ly well. She kept the other team off balance and mixed her pitches up effectively," said Coach Stephanie Rich- ardson. Hillyard—who threw 89 pitches, including 56 for strikes—allowed 13 hits and walked two, while recording one strikeout over seven in- nings as the Lady Chargers improved to 5 -7. Vincennes Lincoln, which slipped to 12-6, stranded a total of 12 runners on the base paths. Pike Central jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first in- ning, when junior left fielder Lauren Vaughn drew a lead off walk, advanced to sec- ond base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore right field- er Kenzie Powell and stole third before scoring on a wild pitch. The Lady Alices, howev- er, would rally in the bottom of the opening frame, when junior Karlie Myers belt- ed a lead off single and— two outs later—scored on a double by freshman catcher Dani Kroeger. The score remained knot- ted at 1-1 until the top of the third inning, when Vaughn drew a one-out walk and ad- vanced to second base on a single by Powell. A fter both runners ad- vanced on an infield ground- out by junior center fielder Aubrie Dawson, sophomore first baseman Mallory Hick- ey stroked a single to right field, scoring both Vaughn and Powell to give Pike Cen- tral a 3-1 lead. Hillyard would hold Vin- cennes Lincoln at bay un- til the home half of the sev- enth inning, when soph- omore center fielder Kali Haynes led off with a sin- gle, advanced to second on a ground out by freshman shortstop Chloe Cardinal, and scored on a single by sophomore catcher Kend - all Myers to cut the deficit to 3-2. One out later, Myers ad- vanced to second base on a single by senior first base- man Jaden Field, but Hill- yard struck out sophomore second baseman Addie Blume to end the game. For the game, Vaughan was 2-for-2 with two walks, scored two runs and stole two bases. Senior designat- ed hitter Hannah Carnah- an also had two hits, while Hickey was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in. Powell went 1-for-3 and scored one run. Sophomore pitcher May- cee Lange took the loss for the Lady Alices, allowing three runs—all earned— on seven hits while walking three and striking out three. "A fter the game we like to talk about highlights and things we could work on. For us coaches, the best part of the win was the constant en- ergy from the dugout. The dugout is like the mitochon- dria of the game. A couple of girls stepped up and from that point, our team energy was powerful. They commit- ted themselves all the way for 7 innings, and it paid off. Any time you can come out with a win against a good quality opponent like Vin- cennes always is, it is a great feeling," said Richardson. Pike Central will visit South Spencer on Wednes- day, May 1, before return- ing home to host a double- header against Evansville Reitz on Saturday, May 4, starting at 10 a.m. The La- dy Chargers will host North Posey on Tuesday, May 7, before playing back-to-back road contests at Forest Park on Thursday, May 9, and at Gibson Southern on Satur- day, May 11.
