So it is great for making them get to know other kids." Petersburg's Fierce Uni- corns, composed of Kaedon Jansen, Tyler Collins, Jacoby Smith and Llinkyn Knust, won the Overall Excellence Award, which also advances them to the state finals. The Excellence Award is judged from interviews with the various teams and reviews of their engineering notebooks. "They kids are ecstatic. The Fierce Unicorns have been performing well. They missed by just one point ad- vancing to state the last three competitions. I know all our teams had a good chance. But anytime you can get a team to advance is great." She said it often takes a few breaks at this level to put you over the top. "We knew we could do it, but coming up just short three compe- titions in a row was pret- ty frustrating." She said it made it all that much better when they finally did qual- ify. "It is great to get two teams to state. The kids are ecstatic. They are all mak- ing plans for the state com- petition and their parents are working on getting ho- tels to stay in." Petersburg's Team Smart- ies won the Design Award. Its team members are Josh- ua Harker, Zayne Bell and Jacob Harker. Knust said the team's suc- cess of the last two years has helped build momentum in the school for the competi- tion. She said, last year Prin- cipal Rick King helped play up the robotics team. They were allowed to drive their robot through the halls around the school for the student body to see. They al- so had a spirit week for the team. "Other kids saw it and got excited about it. It made them want to do it, too," said Knust. ROBOTICS Continued from page 1
