Pike Central would pull back to within six points – at 46 -40 – before Heritage Hills went on a 6 -0 scoring run, on four free throws by sophomore Avery Neff and a basket by Gordon af- ter grabbing the rebound of a missed shot by junior teammate Brianna Quinn, to stretch its lead to 52-40 early in the fourth period. A fter a three-pointer by Marchino pulled the Lady Chargers to within 52-43, Heritage Hills scored eight of the next 11 points to take a 60 -46 lead with 3:28 re- maining. Pike Central would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the contest. "You fall down double figures to a good team, it's just tough," McCutchan said. "You're fighting tooth and nail to get back into it. A few empty possessions, a few turnovers that lead to easy buckets on the other end, that kind of does you in." "But, I won't say a neg- ative word," McCutchan added. "We gave it what we had. Heritage Hills is going to respect us leav- ing the gym here tonight. They might have thought it might have been an easy game for them, but we gave them all they could ask for. We just turned the ball over too much. That's the one thing that killed us." Marchino made sev- en of eight field goal at- tempts – including three of four tries from beyond the three-point arc – and was 1-for-3 from the free throw line while scoring a team-high 18 points. Nel- son and Vaughn added 14 points and 12 points, re- spectively. Sisk led the Lady Char- gers in rebounds with five, while Crow dished out a game-high four assists. Nelson had a team-high three steals. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 23 of 46 field goal attempts – a 50.0 percent average – and hit six of 10 tries from the free throw line. Vaal added 18 points for the Lady Patriots, while Lytton and Neff chipped in with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Heck- el had a game-high five steals. For the game, Heritage Hills made 23 of 51 field goal attempts – a 45.1 per- cent average – and hit 23 of 30 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 17 times. "We couldn't get enough stops," McCutchan said. "We gave up 73 points. We're not going to win very many games doing that. That's just tough. That's a lot of points." "But, on the other end, we scored 61," McCutchan added. "That's one of our better offensive outputs. But we've just got to do a little bit better job, like I said, rebounding. It's just something we have to keep getting better at." In the junior varsity con- test, sophomore Kylee Ap- pman scored a game-high 21 points to lead Heritage Hills to a 44-40 victory over Pike Central. Sopho- more Gracie Jones paced the Lady Chargers with 13 points. Sophomore Ken- zie Powell and freshman Mallory Hunt added eight points and seven points, re- spectively, in the loss. PCMS 8th grade girls' basketball team falls in PAC tournament opener, 42-6 Carley Begle scored a game-high 10 points to lead Forest Park to a 42-6 rout of host Pike Central during the opening round of the Pock- et Athletic Conference Mid- dle School Girls' Basketball Tournament on Thursday, Jan. 24. The Lady Rangers' Amber Tretter – who scored a game- high 11 points in a 30 -12 reg- ular-season win over Pike Central on Dec. 10 – netted six points in the first quarter as Forest Park jumped out to a 12-0 lead. "Forest Park started out in a full-court press and that gave us a few fits early in the game," Lady Chargers head coach Eric Knight said. "But what got Forest Park that re- ally big lead was beating us back down the court. It seemed like the first 12 or 14 points were all off fast-break lay-ups or throwing over our defense for lay-ups." Forest Park outscored the Lady Chargers 7-2 in the sec- ond quarter to extend its lead at halftime to 19 -2, then put up 16 more points in the third quarter – to Pike Central's two points – to take a 35 -4 lead into the final period. Delaney Welch, Chloe Williams and Kennedy Wil- lis scored two points each to lead Pike Central in scoring. "We had another hard time finding the basket," Knight said. "Missed shots is the downfall right now for this team. Not just the fact that we are not scoring very much, but it has taken away the confidence that we real- ly need to finish the season strong. Most of it is basic fun- damentals that we can work on at practice – being ready for the ball, being ready to shoot." "Hats off to Forest Park," Knight added. "They are a tough ball team. They ran the floor great and shot great all night." Landen Marks scored a game-high 14 points as For- est Park defeated host Pike Central 52-23 in the open- ing round of the Pocket Athletic Conference Mid- dle School Boys' Basket- ball Tournament on Thurs- day, Jan. 24. Forest Park's Carter Hin- son scored seven of his game total 12 points in the first quarter as the Rang- ers took a 9 -3 lead.
