Postcards this week at Sweets Col- umn, Winslow, IN 47598, were none in the ol' mailbox. Winslow Patoka River has flowed over its banks and the Riverside Park has ponds of water, and the field across Highway 61 has a lake in it. This past week, we had 4.5 to 5.5 inches of ice, sleet and snow, with winds that caused drifts. This snow stayed around until Wednesday morning when the rain came and washed it all away. The Pike County Schools were off for Monday and Tuesday because of the many county rock roads that were too haz- ardous for the buses to travel on with our children. Thursday into Friday, the temps dropped into the teens but the wind chill was at 0 degrees to minus 0. Sunday Jan. 20 was the time to view the Super Blood Wolf Moon and then on Monday, the moon had a ring around it, which means we will have rain within 24 to 48 hours, and we did. Since the temps have dropped in- to the real winter temps, the heavy coats, hats, scarfs, boots, or galosh- es, and those trusty long johns are be- ing worn. The shovels and ice picks are in full use now, and the yards may either be a frozen mass of ground or a sloppy mess with small lakes in them. Isn't winter great? And it has only be- gun, we have two more months of this till spring, maybe. It's always great to see our grand- daughter, Kyana, and how she has grown taller and become the teenager that defines who she is in this moment. Our friends Tim and Jeanette stopped by Friday and brought us some coal to try out in the stove along with the wood. We thank them so much and the smell of coal is something I haven't smelled since I was of a very young age, and that was quite a few years ago. While they visited, Norm got out his guitar and played some tunes he has strummed together and one song got Jeanette swaying and toe tapping on her birth- day of 66 years. Jeanette and her twin, Janet, are going to celebrate on Satur- day, Happy Birthday! Another star to have a birthday was our daughter, Laura, she turned 38 years. She had to work on that day and was home late but I made her a cake and I have no idea why it didn't rise but it did taste fine and I decorat- ed it with blue powdered sugar icing and candles, flowers, butterflies, and Happy Birthday. So when she did get home I sang to her the Happy Birth- day song and gave her a present from her Pop and Mom. Laura, we love you so much and the kindness you have for others continues. I have been trying my best to not get that dreaded cough, but it caught up to me and now the coughing, wheez- ing, headaches has been around for two days and I'm hoping not to visit the doctor but you all know that some antibiotics will help. As the lights begin to dim on this week's ramblings of mine, I hope that you all keep an eye on family and friends, if only to listen. Slow down and don't be in such a hurry, you miss a lot of interesting stuff in your area of this big world. Say something kind to someone and as I always say, smile, wave, and say Hi to everyone you see this week. Try to stay warm as the temps begin to drop.
