Poplar Street, Petersburg Have you heard the story of Honus? Hon- us was a wicked old renegade who lived in a small country town. When he died his body lay in the funeral parlor for three days with- out anyone even taking notice. Finally, on the day of the burial, a few of his old cronies did stop by to at least pay their respects. As they gathered, the funeral director said: "Now fellows, we can't bury Honus like a dog. We've got to have some kind of service for him. Won't somebody here take charge? " But the silence was profound, so finally the funeral director himself agreed to take charge. He began by asking whether there wasn't someone who had some good word to say for Honus before they buried him. Again there was a deep silence, until finally one old man stood up and said: "Well, I can say this much for Honus; he wasn't always as bad as he sometimes was." To be honest, isn't this true of all of us? Some people take offense at Rom. 3:22,23, which says: "For there is no difference, for all have sinned and come short of the glo- ry of God." They think there is a difference, and that they have not been as sinful as oth- ers. Ah, but while there may be a difference in the nature or the degree of our sins, Ro- mans 3 is right when it says that there is no difference in this: that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." A person may put up a good front, feeling that he is not nearly so great a sinner as others, but whether a bridge is ten feet or a hundred feet short of spanning the chasm, it is still useless, so don't try crossing it. This is why we all need "the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of [God's] grace" (Eph. 1:7). And we may have this by trusting in the Christ who died for our sins (1 Cor. 15:3). "For by grace are ye saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God" (Eph. 2:8). Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas This has been a fairly normal week which has had only a few minor snags and they were not all that difficult to overcome. You know if you live and let God take care of the details of life, His guidance will carry you through. We had one truck to unload and it was a small load of food so that made it a lot eas- ier. There are usually plenty of helpers but there is always room for anyone who has a moment to spare. The truck arrives at the food pantry between 10 and 10 :30 a.m. and it takes about 10 minutes or so to unload the truck. Then there is time for some good old fashioned fellowship with friends. Our church is small in numbers and this weather, Highway 257 being closed for high water and people being sick has caused us to be closed for about a month. I was happy to be able to share a Bible study with some of the residents at Golden Living Center last Friday evening. Many of those attend- ing help me learn more about God's word. There are two things the residents always keep in their minds: a love for God and a love for music. Especially music which they can relate to like the old gospel hymns. Speaking of music our little ensemble played and sang for the residents at Amber Manor after their evening meal last Tuesday. We do all types of music and there is usual- ly something they can enjoy. We might not be the greatest talented group, but we enjoy making their life a little brighter by trying to entertain them for awhile. There are no guarantees, but if there is song you would like for us to sing, let us know and we will The Church Page is made possible by the following Firms and Businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Minutes with the Bible by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam Continued on page 2 There is nothing more sacred than the gift of life. It was given by God and should be taken by God. All the news media and political activity about one woman, Terri Schiavo, helps define America. There are those who do not believe life comes from God and denies the eternal existence of the soul. It is about the right to life for all Ameri- cans. It has deep long shadows like abor- tion, physician assisted suicide, and eutha- nasia. Despite failed attempts to legalize euthanasia, there are many who refuse to give up the fight. There are eight states ap- proving a form of suicide. At the present time California has started a new debate on an assisted suicide law. Let me explain in simple terms what this killing is all about. Physician assisted sui- cide usually means a physician provides a person with drugs to end their life. Assist- ed suicide is when a non-physician provides a person with the means to take their own life. Euthanasia is when a physician or another person in- tentionally kills a pa- tient usually through some kind of lethal injection. This may be done with or with- out the patient's per- mission. In countries where euthanasia is legal the elderly are killed and babies who ap- pear to have some handicap. Some elderly people feel compelled to seek assistance in death. They feel this is the desire of their children or they feel this is what the State wants. Few choose it because of pain. To- day we have modern medicine that can deal with most pain. As a nation we need to wake up before we go down this slippery slope. try to learn it for you. With our church being closed we have had the opportunity to attend our home church which is Cup Creek General Baptist. Sunday the lesson covered what God wants of us in our relationship with our friends. God wants us to have honest, compassionate care for one another. He wants us to love without a concern of a return although a return of one's love is a great blessing. We should always be in prayer for one another seeking blessings of health and happiness for our friends. We should always sincerely thank God for our friends because they are precious to us. The sermon was about fear and not doing things for God for a fear of failure. Fear can be a stimulus for learning how to do some- thing correctly. Fear can keep you alert and help you safely accomplish what needs to be done. But never forget that the perfect love of Jesus can overcome fear and you don't have to be concerned about failure because if you have done your best through Christ you will not be a failure. Our government doesn't seem to ever leave us without something to talk about. When I say something about what is going on I try to never speak with a biased opinion, I try to speak as an American who loves our country. With the shut-down ended for the present there were no winners or losers un- less you want to count the families who once again has a pay check so they can catch up on the bills they got behind on. The more our representatives fuss amongst themselves the weaker we look to other countries. So let us pray for the uni- ty we used to know to return quickly. Let calmer minds discuss not cuss the impor- tant topics at hand and let us have trust in our Lord to guide us. May we all be bless- ing to one another. RIVER OF LIFE 342 E. CR 300 N. Thought for the week: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me togeth- er in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fear- fully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was wo- ven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were writ- ten in your book before one of them came to be" (Psalm 139:13-16, NIV ). Be in prayer for the lost, the sick, our church, our country and leaders, and always each other. God's blessings on you this week. Try to be kind and show God's love, because every- one is fighting some kind of battle. If you don't have a church home, we invite you to any of our services. Gary Watson, Pastor Kathy Henderson, Re- porter and was about talking to God. Are you a talker or a lis- tener? God wants us to talk to Him through prayer. He gave us the "Lord's Prayer" as an example. Remember to not only ask for His help and guidance, but also to thank Him as well. God loves to hear from His people. He is listening. February 2 is Groundhog Day. Shadow or not? February 9 will be the Cel- ebration of Life for Elaine Brooks at the church at 2 p.m. She was a wonderful member of our congrega- tion and church family.
