Ben- son added six points. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 12 of 41 field goal attempts – a 29.3 percent average – and hit four of 11 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 16 times. From beyond the three- point line, the Chargers made just three of 18 at- tempts – a 16.7 percent av- erage. Junior Nathan Owens led Clay City, which improved to 2-6, with 11 points while Patterson tossed in 10 points and grabbed a game-high six rebounds. For the game, the Eels made 17 of 36 field goal at- tempts – a 47.2 percent av- erage – and hit nine of 14 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 12 times. South Knox 49, Pike Central 34 Junior Justin Fickling scored a game-high 18 pints while senior Zacha- ry Welage and senior Gage Bobe added 13 points and 12 points, respectively, to lead South Knox past the Char- gers. Back-to-back baskets by Fickling and senior Noah Thomas snapped an early 2-2 tie and the Spartans led the rest of the game. Trailing 6 -2, Pike Central scored three straight points – on a basket by 5 -foot-10 se- nior guard Hayden Kabrick and a free throw by Scott – to close to within 6 -5 with 4:21 left in the first half. South Knox, however, would stretch its lead to as many as nine points – at 19 - 10 – before back-to-back bas- kets by Scott and 6 -foot se- nior forward Joey Church narrowed the deficit to 19 - 14 with 1:50 remaining in the second period. Leading 21-14 at the in- termission, South Knox out- scored Pike Central 17-7 to extend its lead to 38 -21 with 47 seconds left in the third period. However, the Chargers would battle back, scoring nine straight points – on a three-pointer by 5 -10 soph- omore forward Stephen Krieg and baskets by Gorby, Benson and Scott – to close to within 38 -30 with 6:01 left in the fourth quarter. However, after Pike Cen- tral turned the ball over on its next possession, the Spar- tans rolled off seven straight points – on a three-pointer by Bobe, a basket by Welage and two free throws by Fick- ling – to widen their lead to 45 -30 with 3:56 left. The Chargers could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the game. Gorby led Pike Central with nine points and six re- bounds while Scott added eight points. Benson tossed in six points. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 14 of 36 field goal attempts – a 38.9 percent av- erage – and hit four of sev- en tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 12 times. From beyond the three- point line, the Chargers made just two of 15 attempts – a 13.3 percent average. Thomas grabbed a game- high seven rebounds for South Knox (6 -2) while Welage and Fickling add- ed six each. Bobe also had a game-high three steals. For the game, the Spar- tans made 19 of 36 field goal attempts – a 52.8 percent av- erage – and hit nine of 12 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 10 times. Loogootee 54, Pike Central 38 Trailing 19 -16 at halftime after being held to just two points in the second period, Loogootee outscored Pike Central 23-10 to take a 39 - 29 lead early in the fourth quarter. A basket by Scott pulled the Chargers back to within eight points – at 39 -31 – be- fore Loogootee scored five straight points – on a basket by senior Cade Chezen and a three-point play by junior Nathaniel Hart – to extend its lead to 44-31 with 5:25 re- maining. Pike Central would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the contest. The Lions had jumped out to a 9 -2 lead before three-pointers by Kabrick and Leathco – sandwiched around a three by Chezen – narrowed the gap to 12- 8 with 2:29 left in the first quarter. A fter a basket by Hart ex- tended Loogootee's lead to 14-8, the Chargers scored six straight points – on a pair of free throws and a bas- ket by Gorby and a basket by Benson – to pull even at 14-14 with 6:03 remaining in the second period. The Lions regained the lead on a basket by soph- omore Silas Bauer, but a three-pointer by Kabrick and a basket by Benson pro- pelled Pike Central to a 19 - 16 halftime lead. During the third period, Loogootee made six of eight field goal attempts – includ- ing a three-pointer by junior Landon Harder – and were 7-for-7 from the free throw line, while Pike Central was 3-for-7 from the floor, 4-for-6 from the free throw line and turned the ball over three times. Benson – who made six of eight free throw attempts – paced Pike Central with 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals while Leathco added eight points. Gorby, Kabrick and Scott all had six points each. Kabrick al- so dished out a team-high three assists. "I thought Benson did a nice job today of getting to the free throw line and be- ing aggressive, and Kabrick was aggressive today, which we need, and confident," El- liott said. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 12 of 34 field goal attempts – a 35.3 percent av- erage – and hit 10 of 13 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 12 times. From beyond the three- point line, the Chargers made just four of 19 attempts – a 21.1 percent average. Harder led Loogootee (4- 9) with 16 points. Hart and senior Bailey Dearwest- er added 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Bauer grabbed a game-high seven rebounds while Dearwester dished out a game-high six assists. For the game, the Lions made 21 of 36 field goal at- tempts – a 58.3 percent av- erage – and hit eight of nine tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over just five times. Pike Central will return to action on Friday, Jan. 4, when the Chargers will trav- el to Wood Memorial, with the junior varsity game tip- ping off at 6:30 p.m., East- ern time.
