Sports Page 6 January 18, 2013 JV tries to fix weaknesses to stay strong Veronica Smith Staff Writer Red Bluff Junior Varsity Spartan girls are on top of their game and are making sure they are working their hardest and working hard at what they are really good at all while trying to fix their weaknesses as a team and as individuals. These girls' goal is to go undefeated and with their record of 9-0 they seem to be acheiveing it and nothing can let down their convidence. One of their hardest games to play so far this seasons was playing against Corning, "we came in too cocky since last year it was such an easy win against them," Ashlyn Griffis says. The girls were able to walk Courtesy/Dan King Junior varsity basketball team members striving to put points on the board in their game against Paradise. off the court beating Corning by only 2 points. This season their other goal is to keep going hard and improve on any of their weaknesses that they might have. "My personal goal is that I hope to drive more to the basket," sophomore Ashlyn Griffis explains her goal. At practice they do their routines like fast breaking and after that they work on improving their weaknesses that way by the time they are on the court they can do better and hold their heads high knowing that they have improved. Since last year, the team has improved in a lot of their weaknesses and becoming more of a family than team. This team has high expectations for themselves but they all have faith in the team as one and they plan on not giving up on their undefeated goal. They believe they can do it because they're all supporting eachother and have coaches that encourage them all the time. The girls' next game is on Tuesday against Enterprise at 5p.m. JV and varsity girls soccer: Undefeated Zachary Smith Staff Writer FFER JV and Varsity girls soccer teams. It is a new year with new opportunities and goal. However, the girls Junior varsity and varsity soccer teams still hold their confidence from 2012. Both teams wish to finish off this season undefeated in their league. "I think we have a good shot" said senior Megan Williams from the Varsity team In reference to not only going undefeated but winning the league all together. Both teams have won six games this season and the varsity has tied once. Each of these teams is satisfied with the season so far and what they've accomplished. "I feel like we have had a very successful season so far." said sophomore Maryn Spangler from the Junior varsity team. "I feel like we are doing really well compared to last year. We win most of our games..." said sophomore Aislynn Lair From the varsity team. What keeps these teams winning their games. Well the Junior Varsity team says that it helps that the league they are in isn't as strong as last year's. However, both teams still tribute their wins to good coaches, hard practices, and strong team chemistry. "We work really well together as a team, as a whole... we are like a family." said Spangler. "Off the field we get along really well." said Williams. "Carreres is a really good coach and the practices are " We work really well together as a team" -Maryn Spangler really intense." said Senior Jackie Holmer. Although the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams are already good they hope to get better and improve their game. Maryn Spangler and Nicole Sauvé said that the team could work on the its techniques because they have a lot really good individual players but everybody should work on passing it and working as a team. Megan summed up everyone's thoughts when she said, "I do expect us to get a lot better. Just because we are good now, since we started off the season so strong, that is only more room for progression and success, and I think we will get better by pushing each other more and we have a lot of encouraging people on our team,". Both teams played Shasta High School on January 9. Both teams also won. However, the Junior Varsity won 10-0 just emphasizing their commitment to being undefeated this season. Junior Varsity and Varsity play foothill tonight as they continue to fight for their goal of being undefeated in their league. At time of print the varsity team lost to Enterprise also losing their chances of going undefeated. Frosh basketball Varsity girls b-ball sets sights on league remains optimistic Veronica Smith Staff Writer with small team size Owen Ritter Staff Writer Red Bluff high schools frosh girls' basketball team has had an optimistic season this year thus far. The team feels like they have improved and have grown closer throughout the season with help from Nicole Renfro # 12s cheering and constructive criticism which helps the team grow closer as a team and as friends. Renfroe also said, "I think we can [improve] in communicating." There is always room for improvement in any form of team or group and it seems that most of the players will come back next year and further built friendships and dominate the court. Renfroe said,"I love practice we run a lot though…," the practices may be hard, but practice is an important part of any team. It's the training that gets each separate player in the games to work as a whole. To engage each and every one of their different unique strength is the key to unlocking the door to expressing the teams' full potential. This will help bring players closer in an unathletic way, also bonding friendships will prevail in providing excellent playing on the court and enabling players to give each other more constructive criticism because of the connection players have made and lack of modesty in expressing feelings towards each other. Emily Ryan likes the practices and but claims the team as a whole needs to push harder, but she can tell they help the players improve their skills. Ryan feels that the players should push harder, but they all have good attitudes. The players feel the team has done very well. "I think we've done really well and gave it our best," said Emily. As the season goes on, each individual player finds their places on the team. Players feel like they have done really well during the first season of their freshman year and hope for more success in later years and seasons to come. With one another each player has given it their all and in this become closer as friends. The Varsity Red Bluff Spartan girls are in the middle of their season with their record of 12-4 with their main goal which is to win league overall. Over Christmas break the varsity girls took a trip to San Diego for a tournament, they were ablt to play 2 Washington teams and one team from New York. Although they didn't do their best during their games they felt like they had became a closer group during the time. "We became closer and did a lot of outside activities together," says Emily Gallagher. During practice they work on their weaknesses which are mainly rebounding and main defense, when the team is not doing their best they are all able to be good friends and pick each other up. The teams' main goal is to win league which takes a lot of hard work but they feel like they can achieve it as long as they stick to it. They have won their past six games since their game against Central Valley in the beginning of January. They practice a lot of the time and make sure that their soft spots are touched up at practice to make sure that they will do great during their games. One of their other goals are to work hard and beat Enterprise because they are the best team in the league right now and after all their practicing they think their hard work will pay off in the end. The girls are doing great as one, they work very hard at practice and they are always making sure all the girls are doing well because they are all so really close. Their next game is Tuesday January 22nd against Enterprise and they hope to meet their goal which is to beat Enterprise.
