Arts & Entertainment Page 3 January 18, 2013 'Promised Land' too slow paced Ceighlee Fennel Staff Writer I usually go for the action and adventure movies, but this time I decided to switch it up a little and go with "Promised Land". "Promised Land" is directed by Gus Van Sant and Matt Damon is starring as the main character, Steve Butler. "Promised Land" is put into the drama category. This slow movie is about a young salesman who comes into a poor rural community and gives them a choice on whether to sell their land for fracking or to refuse. I felt like the movie's pace was too slow for me. Also, it could definitely have used more drama or even some action here and there to keep my mind from wandering. The story line was very real and direct. There were a couple of interesting factors in the movie, but it was still not enough for me. At the beginning Steve is given an assignment to go to Pennsylvania. He has to convince the people there to sell their land for fracking and to bring natural gas to the community. Along the way to completing his goal, Steve and his partner Sue Thomason, played by Frances McDormand, meet obstacles and refusal. As the story unfolds, twists cause the movie to be a tiny bit more exciting. Although, I still found myself bored and restless. I came into this movie expecting lots of drama and conflict, but I was disappointed. There was still drama and a little conflict, but it was nothing near what I was expecting. Even though they disappointed me 'Fun Run' addicting multiplayer app that you cannot put down This app developed by DirtyBit is for all devices Tymberlyn Bealer Staff Writer "Fun Run" is a new app for your iPod, iPad, iPhone, and other devices, which is developed by DirtyBit. This app is another addictive game that you cannot seem to put down after the second you get it. It seems as if everyone has this app on their device right now, since "Fun Run" is ranked number one in both the action and racing categories. This app has many positive features that have to do with cute furry animals racing each other. One of the best parts about "Fun Run" is that you can play with any of your other friends who have the app, or you can play anyone around the world on the internet. Creating a membership is extremely simple; it involves a user name, password, and email address. Next, you choose your own cute character from many different kinds of cute cartoon animals. The goal of this game is to http://www.google.com race your opponent and try to beat them to the finish line. As you are racing, you will meet many obstacles and earn rewards. As you play the game, you will pass rewards that are small boxes. These small boxes contain powers that make the game harder for your opponent to beat you. Some powers you may pick up along the way would be the ability to slow fellow racers down by hurling weapons at them such as, saw blades and lightning bolts. Unfortunately, this means that your opponent can also throw these things back at you. The directions and controls are easy to use and are very helpful. Also, there are plenty of levels to keep you and your opponents attracted. When playing this game it is important to remember it takes practice and strategy to master. The more you play the better and more familiar you become with the track, making it easier for you to get through the obstacles more quickly. Overall, "Fun Run" is a new app that is fun and exciting and I would recommend it to everyone. in that sense, I was surprised on how real the characters and story was portrayed. Also, they added some important points about families, inheritance, power, and money. Throughout the movie, Steve develops and changes a couple different times. At the start, he is determined and confident, but that slowly turns to frustration and confusion. Steve changes up until the end of the movie. Most of the other characters stay the same, but overall, the acting was carried out very well. "Promised Land" was not quite my style, but it was not a train wreck either, this movie did not capture my attention or meet my expectations. The positives parts that the movie had were how real the characters and situation seemed and that the acting was pretty spot on. I would recommend "Promised Land" to an older audience because as a teen, I was bored and needed more action in the movie. An alright movie focused more on the adult crowd with its slow plot and life learning lessons 'When You Were Mine' just had bad qualities Ashlan Brunello Features Editor Have you ever had that one friend that wasn't just a "friend"? Well, Rosaline has. The novel "When You Were Mine", written by Rebecca Serle, follows a teenage girl at the beginning of her senior year. Rose begins to believe that it is time for her and her best friend to go to the next level. Rob (the best friend) believes the same thing until Rose's long lost cousin Juliet comes back to town. Rob falls for Juliet leaving Rose in the dust. Basically, the entire novel is about Rose moving on from Rob and being betrayed by her cousin. Many people have compared this story to Romeo and Juliet saying that it is the modern day version. I would have to disagree. Just because a character is named Juliet does not make it comparable. Yes, this is a great novel to read, but some parts are…corny. The novel is in different ways, predictable, annoying, and just too drama filled. Although it has these bad qualities, I enjoyed the story line and how it all played out. I may seem crazy for enjoying how it ended up, due to the fact that there is death, (the only resemblance I saw to Romeo and Juliet), yet, I thought that this turned the previous "predictable" layout, into a surprising and emotional switch of pace. I think that this is the perfect novel for any teenage girl, especially if they are going through high school. I think that many girls can relate to the story of basically, being deserted by that one guy that they have feelings for. It is a good novel to put all your focus into for a night and just day dream about the life of the characters. Serle did a good job in her writing and in describing all of Rose's different emotions. I would rate this book at about a 2 out of 4 just based on the fact that it had bad qualities. Not the Romeo and Juliet story you were looking for Fun Run is for everyone!!!
