Page 5 RBHS takes 'The Pledge' Bailey Patchen Features Editor On Tuesday morning, Jan 15, Red Bluff High School hosted an assembly about bullying in the gym. The assembly was a video about bullying, the effects of bullying, and what to do if you or someone you know is being bullied. The video showed different life scenarios about four people that were either bullied, bullied other Cameron Perdue (9) people, or both. The video "Seeing family because I donʼt also contained up to date get to see them that much." music which made it more enjoyable to watch. "I thought the assembly met the goal for what our administration had," Vicki Raet (10) "Sleeping in and relaxing." Jasmine Zapien (12) "I went to Mexico and had a good time." Four different slides that were shown to the student body during the assembly. said Mr. Barriga, Red Bluff High's principal. The administration's goal for this assembly was for the message of the anti-bullying topic and for people to make the BLUFFER/Bailey Patchen pledge to stop bullying. Because there has been a noticeable increase in bullying and cyberbullying, the high school administration felt they should contact a company to get this message across to students and staff about the dangers of bullying. "The idea behind this was to spark some conversations about this issue and to take the pledge about bullying," said Mr. Barriga. The student body felt that the assembly was very informative and up to date with our age and had teenage type of music in it which made it more enjoyable to watch. Red Bluff High School was reconized by the company putting on the video saying that they felt Red Bluff High was filled with nice kids and tht Red Bluff High gave great reactions to certain situations happening in the video. All in all, The administration was pleased with how the assembly went. Long time Red Bluff resident, Bill Wong Foey, publishes book about Chinese history Julia Liebert Staff Writer Lane Hoskins (11) "Buying all my hats because I love hats." January 18, 2013 The longest living family in Red Bluff is the Foey family, who has lived here since the 1850s. They moved to Red Bluff because the Chinese worked for California at this time and there was a lot of work available to each one of them. Since they were the only Chinese family living in Red Bluff at the time, Bill Wong Foey was bullied quite a bit. Many people did petty little things to him, and some would go as far as spitting on him because of his Chinese race. When Foey went to Red Bluff High School there were more restrictions about students' appearances. The campus was closed to all students and they had a strict dress code. The dress code said that all girls had to wear dresses and skirts and that they were not permitted to wear pants. Along with the girls, the boys' hair couldn't be past their ears. Out of a little over 1,000 students, there was one African American, and three to five Chinese students who attended Red Bluff High. After Foey graduated high school, he decided that he wanted to become a substitute teacher. Foey decided to become involved in the subject of art and teach this only. Spartan Health Alexis Simpkins Staff Writer People who suffer from celiac disease, or intolerance of gluten, may benefit from a gluten free diet. Mr. Wheeler (Teacher) Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, "Family, food, and the snow." and other related grain types. A gluten free diet is a medically accepted treatment for celiac disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine where it can't digest gluten. Some symptoms of celiac disease are headaches or migraines, skin problems such as rashes and skin spots, digestive issues, IBS-like symptoms, problems absorbing nutrients, gut pain after eating, and swelling or joint pain. Excluding foods that contain gluten can help with these symptoms. Gluten free is not always healthy for everyone. Taking gluten out of your diet can also help you lose weight. However, Mrs. Dausse (Teacher) if you are already thin, this may not be a healthier "Seeing my three year oldʼs choice. Better gluten free options include brown rice, face when she got a tinker bell rice bread, quinoa, millet, coconut flour and almond umbrella from Santa." flour. Therefore, although a gluten free diet varies from person to person, there are still some healthier Sound Off/Sam Rodriguez choices you can make about it. He chose this because he liked the energy and the fresh ideas that all of the students had. When asked about " Have an open mind, try something new..." -Foey his most memorable teaching moment, he said, "I was being a substitute teacher at Mercy High School for almost a whole spring semester and when I left I felt like I didn't do a good enough job and that I had kind of let them down. I ran into another teacher about a week later who worked at the school and they said that the students that I taught had put up posters all over the school with my name on it which showed how much they loved me and wanted me to come back. It brought me to tears. I felt that I might have made their life a little better." He published a novel, "Winter Melon", about the Chinese history when the Chinese army killed over 3,000 people, including his aunt and uncle. He thought it would be cool for a variety of people to be able to read about what someone in that time went through and what they experienced within the population around them. Foey has won a number of awards for creative writing and holds multiple degrees in fine arts and social studies. His advice to young writers and anyone that is willing to hear him out is, "Have an open mind, try something new everyday."
