Bloomington North, Floyd Central, Evansville By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School football team saw its sea- son come to an end with a 56 -6 loss at Vincennes Lincoln in the first round of the sectional tournament on Friday, Oct. 19. At the same time, according to first-year head coach Dave Stephens, the Chargers may also have gotten a glimpse of what they could become. "I felt like our kids gave a valiant effort; it's just we're not football skill-wise and physical-wise on Vincennes' level," said Stephens. "They're kind of, I think, a good model for how we want to build our program. We want to be good on defense. We want to be effective in the pass game." Senior quarterback Evan Combs completed four of sev- en first-half pass attempts – including touchdown toss- es to senior wide receiver Isaac Lane and senior running back Raekwon Haislip – for 94 yards and ran for another as the 11th-ranked Alices improved to 8 -2 with their sev- enth straight win. Haislip also rushed for one touchdown while freshman running back Stefan Hernandez ran for another. Vincennes Lincoln also scored three touchdowns on in- terception returns by senior linebacker Eli Malone, soph- omore linebacker Isaac Jean and sophomore linebacker Brayten Potter. Pike Central, which slipped to 1-9 overall with its sev- enth consecutive loss, was led by senior running back Eli Coleman, who carried the ball 23 times for 103 yards while catching two passes for eight yards. Coleman scored the Chargers' lone touchdown when sophomore quarterback Lars Utterback – on 4th-and-14 from Pike Central's 49 -yard line – completed a six-yard pass to senior wide receiver Judah Leathco. Leathco then lateraled the ball to Coleman, who raced the remaining 45 yards into the end zone, pulling the Char- gers to within 36 -6 with 6:43 left in the second quarter. "You've got to run some trick plays once in a while and, you know, the old hook-and-ladder has stood the test of time; people have been running it for a long time, and we were able to get it off," Stephens said. "You've got to make the throw, you've got to make the catch, and then you've got to deliver it." Stephens said that an off-the-field injury to junior tight end Levi McCarter that occurred on the night before the game forced the Chargers to move junior running back Ma- rio Fields to fill McCarter's spot, resulting in Coleman get- ting the bulk of the team's ball-carrying duties.
