Postcard # 647 has a black and white photo with a large tower alongside a large walk- way near the water where several steamboats are there to pick up their passengers. Written is Str MacKinaw and Tower Pier 1916. (Another name was Navy Pier). On the back it reads: Hi Sweets, en- joy the summer and stay cool. Janie Tormohlen. Postcard # 648 has the large towering buildings in the background with sever- al objects depicting the city with a torch, a sail, eagle, la- dy liberty, big globe, and a sash with art, science, indus- try written on it. Other writ- ing - Chicago of Today and the Metropolis of the West. On the back it says - Hi Sweets, I just had a great week in Chicago. Enjoy the card. Janie Tormohlen. Janie, thank you for post- cards 647 and 648 from Chi- cago, and you have a great summer also. I loved the cards and a trip to Chicago. The Patoka River has gone down since last Saturday the 7th and the temps have been pretty nice without the hu- midity for the weekend. Then the heat began again where the heat index was 100 -105 degrees on Monday and Tues- day. Wednesday was humid, but it was not as bad as the days before and quite cool in the 60s at night, but that on- ly lasted until the weekend again where the index was high with rain. This year's summer will be remembered for its heat index. We also had an O-zone alert on July 13 for sev- eral counties around Pike. Friday into Saturday at Mill- ers Field there was camping for Clog the Patoka, and in the overflow section, there were about 20 tents set up. There were a few tents and campers at Millers Field as well. Hav- ing camping there was new this year, and it brought a lot more cloggers into the lake. About 811 in total. Friday night there were fireworks at Millers Field that we almost forgot about, but as we came into Winslow, we stopped at Riverside Park and saw some bright, colorful fireworks that even made me oh and ah and wow. It was a big hit for ev- eryone because afterwards we heard clapping from that area. Thanks for the beauti- ful fireworks. The float lasted 2-3 hours on a beautiful, less humid day. I talked to a few who floated down the river, and they all said it was a really nice float that they enjoyed. The Patoka was almost up to the bank, but when the float began the river was down a little, and it was easier to float down. There were three floaters who on Sunday were floating on to Princeton, and we wished them a safe trip. I loved to see the floats of yel- low ducks, a blown up cam- ouflage canoe, lots and lots of canoes, kayaks, boards of all colors and a lot of stars who needed to eat and have some- thing to drink. Looking for- ward to seeing all of the float- ers next year. Patoka Township Fire De- partment of Josh Popp, who had just passed and certified for water rescue, and Ethan Kunz, Richard McDowell and Daniel Shelton were there to aid in any mishap that may have happened along with the conservation officer Ken Tincher and some of the Winslow Lions like Norm, Leroy and Mike. Thank you for your help with Clog the Patoka. The Winslow Lions Club was there to serve breakfast and lunch, and we sold out of every- thing to eat and just a few drinks of soda were left. Us Lions were starting at 7 a.m. to serve break- fast for those early risers and then lunch for when the first cloggers on the Patoka came in. Since we had a lot of stars floating in, we stayed until 8 p.m. when we had no more food to cook and the crowd had finished almost to the end. The Winslow Li- ons would like to say Thank You to all who stopped by, and we all will be happy to do this again next year. A big thanks to Clemmy and the Kayak Mafia for this won- derful event in our neck of the woods. We had just heard of the passing of Frank Heuring last week. To Rachael, his wife of 68 years, and to all the Heur- ings and friends, we all miss Frank. Remember all those good times you had and share with others and more memo- ries will be added. Have you thought of doing the Doo Wop at the Septem- ber 15 Winslow Community Festival? If so, call 1-812-789 - 2366 to get information and rules. This is a lip sync, and there must be at least three groups participating. Each group must have at least three people. This will be Septem- ber 15, and it will be here be- fore you know it. Have you got your item lit up for the September 15 Light Up Winslow Parade? This is the 13th year to shine bright in Winslow. Norm and I helped out our friend Dixie along with Ver- non to clean out her garage. It was a humid day, but we start- ed early so it wasn't too bad heat wise. We also got some flea market items for the Ju- ly 21 date. When we had the wind and all the rain, some trees were uprooted or broke in two, and Dixie has a big pine tree that was uprooted. It could be saved and they did a great job of sitting it back up. Well, it's time to dim the lights on this week's ram- blings and head to the Press-Dispatch on Friday the 13th. I hope it wasn't unlucky for you and you had a lucky day. Mine was lucky because Laura came by for a few hours and we got all caught up on many things. Keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and see all the wonders in your area, like a baby squirrel walking in front of your truck instead of crossing the road, then al- ways smile, wave and say hi to everyone you see this week.
