There were no postcards this week at Sweets Column Winslow, Ind. 47598 in the ol' mailbox. Winslow Patoka River is up to its banks from all the rain we had that came along with the severe storms that came through Winslow last Tuesday. Winslow and oth- er areas have had more than enough rain, but it did have some cooling when the storm blew in. It brought back very humid and hot weather again though. A fter these storms came in and left, Norm and I had debris to pick up in our yards. The front yard had two big limbs from Grand- ma's tree, and in the oth- er yards there were just small limbs. We took a drive around Winslow and outside of town where 1st Street has a limb across the road and hung on the pow- er lines; North Street had two tree limbs down and one covered the street; then on Lafayette Street, between Cherry and East, another tree limb covered that street. Sever- al trees broke in half or big limbs broke were found in many yards all over Winslow including Oak Jill cemetery. One tree in Bar- bara Featherston's yard up- rooted and fell on the ga- rage. Farther down the road at Greg's field, another tree uprooted, and others had broken limbs. Campbelltown has a tree limb that bent over the power lines to the house. Then in Ayrshire, a tree fell and almost blocked half the road, and down the Ayrshire Hill, there was water over the road, and then in the woods and yards, there were more trees down. The storms we had were full of lightening, thunder and sideways rain that lasted about one hour with strong winds. The streets were cleared off for traffic to flow except for that street where Vectren had to be called in before the tree could be re- moved because it was hang- ing on the lines. Chainsaws are heard all over the area, and we also had to fire up ours. Saturday, June 23 was the benefit to help Steve Nel- son with expenses after his wife, Becky, passed. At Millers Field, the day start- ed out humid but with a lit- tle breeze, but the weath- er stayed hot and humid. The Winslow Lions Club set up to serve fish and three sides with drinks of sodas, and desserts were brought in by the Winslow Beautifi- cation and Economic. The Millers Field was mowed by the American Legion Post 115, and lots of donations from several businesses for the Silent Auction came in. Other donations were giv- en, too. Winslow Lions had a great time as we cooked and served the dinner plates and listened to the three musi- cal groups - the Gadabouts and Tony Rothrock, Swamp- billy and the Hootenannies. The music was most enjoy- able to our listening ears, and our storyteller, Vernon was great. Steve Nelson and the family were there all day and enjoyed the company of friends who came by for their friend, Steve. With all who came and donated for this cause, we all thank you so much. We all raised a con- siderable amount of funds to help out our friend. Steve ap- preciates all the help from all his friends, and he also wants to say, "Thank you all for your generous gifts." New this year at the 13th Winslow Community Festi- val on September 15: Doo Wop is born again. Find a group of at least three peo- ple and call 1812-789 -2366 for rules and more informa- tion. Spread the word! The Igloo has new hours as of June 24, 2018. They are open the same days ad before, but the times have changed to 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-9 p.m. The Bertrum Market east of the former Trading Post is open on Tuesday and Thurs- day from 4-8 p.m., and on Sat- urday from 8 a.m. to noon. They have veggies and oth- er crops you may need. The preschool in Camp- belltown has a stand also, so check it out. Since this is summer now, we all should take it easy when we are out in the hot and humid weather, especial- ly when the heat index goes up to the 100 to 110 degree range. Now that is really hot. I believe I mentioned I have a flower garden spot, but it has gotten out of control. The garden spot has Black-eyed Susans and a good crop of weeds and grass. New flow- ers blooming are the For- mosa Trees and the Rose of Sharons in purple, white and pink blooms, and the snow- ball plants are up. Have you thought of what to light up in the 13th Light Up Winslow Parade on Sep- tember 15? It's almost here, and you all can be a part of this great event. We already have some new starts to join in our hometown fun, so light up something with our reg- ulars. Again, I would like to say to all who turned out, gave what you could give, all the many donations for the auc- tion, the music that was so entertaining, all groups who came together for one of our Winslow stars, I give you all a round of applause and say again, "Thank you, all." As the lights begin to dim on these ramblings, keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and enjoy your area of this big world. As al- ways, smile, wave and say Hi to everybody this week. 2501 Newton St (HWY 231 N) Jasper, IN 47546 www.obcycle.com 866-yamaha-6 Obermeyer H O N D A - YA M A H A - S U Z U K I 2501 Newton St (HWY 231 N) Jasper, IN 47546 www.obcycle.com 866-yamaha-6 Great SelectiOn!
