Sullivan 10, Pike Central 8 Junior Megan Eber- hardt belted a two-run ho- mer to snap a 6 -6 tie in the sixth inning as host Sulli- van defeated Pike Central 10 -8 on Saturday, April 7. The Lady Arrows scored six first-inning runs, including four on a bases-loaded home run by senior catcher Carly Brown. Pike Central scored a pair of runs in the sec- ond inning on a two-run homer by junior second baseman Emily Carnahan, then plated another in the third inning on a run-scor- ing single by senior pitch- er Peyton Sorgius to close to within 6 -3. A fter Sullivan added two runs in the bottom of the third inning to extend its lead to 8 -3, the Lady Chargers staged a two-out rally in the fifth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and plating five runs to tie the score at 8 -8. A bases-loaded walk to Emily Carnahan, a two- run single by senior cen- terfielder Shelbi Pipes and back-to-back run-scoring singles by senior short- stop Audra Stone and ju- nior Hannah Carnahan pulled the Lady Chargers even at 8 -8 before Steele got Croak – the 10th bat- ter to step to the plate in the inning – to ground out. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Brown drew a lead-off walk, then came home on Eberhardt's blast over the left field fence. "We out-hit them, but out of the 11 hits they got, five of them were doubles and two were home runs," Pike Central head coach Rick Weisman said. "Pey- ton had to get the ball up a little bit because the um- pire wasn't giving her the low strike, and they start- ed tattooing her quite a bit, and the wind was blow- ing out." Sorgius went the dis- tance for the Lady Char- gers, allowing 10 runs – six of which were earned – on 11 hits while walk- ing four and striking out three. Pike Central fell to 2-1 with the loss. "I think we learned from it," Weisman said. "I think it was probably good for us, to show us that we have to show up. I'd like to play them again. And maybe we will somewhere down the road." Pike Central, which hosted Tecumseh on Tues- day, April 10, will play at Castle on Thursday, April 12, before returning home to host North Knox on Fri- day, April 13. The Lady Chargers will then travel to Heritage Hills on Mon- day, April 16, to Prince- ton on Tuesday, April 17, and to Wood Memorial on Thursday, April 19. SOFTBALL Continued from page 3 Stone, Jenkins lead PCHS girls' track team past South Knox, Sullivan Freshman Libby Stone won three individual events while junior Alyssa Jenkins won two as the Pike Central High School girls' track and field team finished first in a three-team meet hosted by South Knox on Thursday, April 5. Stone placed first in the 100 -meter dash with a sea- son-best time of 14.09 sec- onds, first in the 200 -me- ter dash with a season-best time of 29.00 seconds, and first in long jump with a season-best leap of 14 feet, 6 inches. Jenkins placed first in shot put with a season-best throw of 29 feet, 8 inches, and first in discus with a throw of 102 feet, 1/2 inch. Also placing first in indi- vidual events for the Lady Chargers were junior Lillie Pancake in pole vault with a leap of 7 feet, 6 inches; and sophomore Lily Willis in the 800 -meter run with a time of 3:06.03. In addition, Pancake and Willis teamed up with se- niors Cailey Furman and Halley Powers to place first in the 3,200 -meter re- lay with a season-best time of 11:41; and Stone teamed up with Powers and fresh- men Jenna Meyer and Lau- ren Young to place first in the 1,600 -meter relay with a time of 9:42.50. Placing second in indi- vidual events for the La- dy Chargers were Willis in the 1,600 -meter run with a season-best time of 6:35.63, and in long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 1 inch; Young in the 100 -meter hurdles, and in the 300 -meter hur- dles with a time of 53.06 seconds; and senior Tay- lor Deffendoll in high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 6 inch- es. Placing third in individu- al events for the Lady Char- gers were Furman in the 800 -meter run with a time of 3:12.36; Pancake in the 400 -meter run with a sea- son-best time of 1:14.07; Powers in pole vault with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches; and freshman Maddie Williams in high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 4 inches. Placing fourth in indi- vidual events for the Lady Chargers were Furman in the 1,600 -meter run with a time of 7:04.84; Meyer in the 100 -meter dash with a time of 14.52 seconds, and in pole vault with a leap of 6 feet; and sophomore Cyn- thia Sapp in the 800 -meter run with a season-best time of 3:45.24. In addition, the team of Deffendoll, Jenkins, Meyer and Powers placed second in the 400 -meter relay with a time of 57.82 seconds. As a team, Pike Cen- tral scored a total of 71 points. Sullivan was second with 49 points while South Knox finished third with 43 points. "The girls did an excel- lent job, setting PRs in near- ly every event they were in," Lady Chargers head coach Ryne Biesterveld said. "We had three girls clear the opening height in pole vault, with Lillie winning the event. Alyssa Jenkins broke the 100 -foot mark in discus the first meet we have been able to throw in, and Libby Stone and Lily Willis both improved over a foot in long jump." Lady Charger netters drop 4-1 loss to Princeton The Pike Central High School girls' tennis team dropped a 4-1 loss to visit- ing Princeton on Thursday, April 5, to fall to 1-1. At No. 1 singles, Lady Chargers senior Cass Cond- er lost to Princeton junior Brooke Shafer 6 -2, 6 -0. At No. 2 singles, Lady Chargers junior Meredith Benson lost to Princeton ju- nior Emma Ault 6 -1, 7-5. At No. 3 singles, Lady Chargers sophomore Shel- by Vaughn defeated Princ- eton junior Halle Foree 1-6, 6 -1, 6 -4. At No. 1 doubles, the La- dy Chargers team of junior Kirsten Jansen and sopho- more Audrey Keepes lost to the Princeton duo of junior Syerra York and sophomore Kloe Key 1-6, 6 -3, 7-6 (7-3). At No. 2 doubles, the Lady Chargers team of senior Ja- dyn Ashby and junior Grace Smith lost to the Princeton duo of senior Rachel Stiles and junior Krislynn Waters 4-6, 6 -2, 6 -2. Pike Central, which played at North Daviess on Tuesday, April 10, will host North Posey on Wednesday, April 11, before traveling to Forest Park on Monday, April 16, and to Southridge on Wednesday, April 18. Junior Noah Onyett shot a nine-hole score of 39 as the Pike Central High School boys' golf team placed first in a season-opening tri-meet hosted by the Chargers at Prides Creek Golf Course on Thursday, April 5. Senior Lincoln Vaughn had a 42 while juniors Austin Holder and Hayden Kabrick both fired a 48. Sophomore Jaylon Mills added a 52, freshman Cutter Reed shot a 53. In junior varsity play, freshman Hunter Traylor had a 58. As a team, Pike Central had a score of 177. Gibson Southern and North Posey both tied for second with scores of 187. "It was a good win to be - gin the season, against two solid conference opponents – both teams beat us last year," Chargers head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "The course played wet, windy and diffi- cult. We left a lot of strokes out on the course. I really think we can really improve on our first score. We haven't been able to play as much as we usually would at this point of the season since the weath - er has been so terrible." Pike Central will take on Washington at the Country Oaks Golf Club on Thurs- day, April 12, then travel to Christmas Lake Golf Course on Monday, April 16, to bat- tle Heritage Hills, before re- turning home to host South- ridge on Tuesday, April 17, and North Knox on Thurs- day, April 19.
