B-2 Sports Wednesday, September 20, 2017 The Press-Dispatch "My goal was to break 85 but, other than that, I just tried to have fun," said Bur- khart. "I didn't get mad at myself like I usually do." "She was down a little bit at one point in the year," Gideon said. "To see her come back and play really well just speaks to her men- tal strength. She's a tough kid. Tough mentally." A fter making par on the par-5 Hole No. 1, Burkhart had double bogeys on the next two holes before shoot- ing par on four of the next six – with bogeys on the oth- er two – to finish the front nine with a 6 -over-par 41. "Whenever I finished my first nine, I was surprised when I figured out my score was 41, because it didn't feel like I'd played that well," Burkhart said. "But my goal was just to come out here and play and have fun." Burkhart parred three of the next four holes and had a birdie on the par-4 Hole No. 11 before posting double bo- geys on Holes No. 14 and 15. She then bogeyed two of the last three holes to finish the back nine with a 5 -over-par 40. "That's a good score," Gideon said of Burkhart's 11-over-par 81. "And she'd be the first to tell you, if she could putt, it could have been a 76, 75. She didn't putt well. But she hit the ball re- al well." "She had a lot of pars," Gideon added. "She hit the ball really well." Bohnert finished the first nine holes with three straight double bogeys while posting a 8 -over-par 43. She then shot a 6 -over-par 41 on the back nine. "You expect them to play well, because they usually do," Gideon said of Burkhart and Bohnert. "I can't ask much more out of them than what they did today. They kind of laid the groundwork for the rest of us to come in and, if everyone does their job, we'd do fine." "The other three girls were much better this week," Gideon said. "Mack- enzie played really smart, hit her irons off the tee, didn't try to do too much and she was 14 strokes bet- ter than last week, so that helps a lot." Holder, playing in just the second 18 -hole tourna- ment of her high school ca- reer, "stepped up big," Gide- on said. "She could have easily come out here today and shot a really big score," said of Holder, who shot an 18 -hole score of 112 during the Washington Invitational earlier in the season. "I was proud of them to- day," Gideon added. "They did a nice job. It's nice to move up a spot. Last year, we were third, and sweating it out right to the end, beat- ing South Knox by a stroke. This year was a little more relaxed coming in." Vincennes Rivet was first with a team score of 348 while Washington was third with a team score of 383. Vincennes Lincoln placed fourth with a team score of 384, followed by North Knox (393), North Daviess (409), Princeton (410), Sullivan (441) and Linton-Stockton (466). Barr-Reeve and South Knox also participated but did not have enough golfers to qualify for a team score. Advancing to the region- al tournament as individu- als are Jessica Ploff of Vin- cennes Lincoln, Madison Winemiller of North Knox and Kadee Claridge of Barr- Reeve. Grace Waggoner of Vin- cennes Rivet was the low scorer with an 18 -hole score of 77. Burkhart was second at 81, followed by Bohnert (84), and Lily Waggoner and Gracie Smith Vincennes Riv- et (tied at 87). The Lady Chargers will be playing on the Coun- try Oaks Golf Course for the third time this season. In their first outing there, Bohnert tied Reed's 18 -hole school record score during the Washington Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 12, when Pike Central finished eighth out of 12 teams with a team score of 390. Then, five days later, Bohnert tied Burkhart's nine-hole school record score of 39 during a tri-meet against Vincennes Lincoln and host Washington. Burkhart originally set the nine-hole school re- cord in 2016 when the Lady Chargers opened the season against Washington – at the Country Oaks Golf Course. "We know we can play that course, and we've played pretty well there," Gideon said. "That's nice. We can use that as a measuring stick to see how much we've im- proved from that day. We didn't play very well that day ... but I think we're a lot bet- ter team now than we were at that point of the season." "It's a little more open than here – longer, but it's not really if they set the tees up right," Gideon added. "Ei- ther Natalie could shoot in the 70s out there, if they play well, because they've both broke 40 there in matches before." The top three teams and the top five individuals from non-advancing teams will advance to the state tour- nament, which will be held Sept. 29 -30 at the Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel. "Both those girls have a legitimate shot, if they play well, to move on," Gide- on said of Burkhart and Bohnert. "They'd have to re- ally play, but anyone's going to have to really play to get out. That's just the way it is." The regional tournament is scheduled to begin Sat- urday at 8:30 a.m., Eastern time. The Pike Central High School volleyball team posted three straight-set wins over South Knox, Washington and Eastern Greene to place first in a round-robin tournament hosted by the Lady Hatch- ets on Saturday, Sept. 16. The Lady Chargers be- gan the day with a 25 -15, 25 -18 victory over South Knox. Junior Becca Crow scored eight points – on six kills and two ace serves – and dished out a team- high 10 set-assists. Se- nior Brook Nalley had sev- en points on four kills and three ace serves. In addition, senior Pey- ton Sorgius had three ace serves, senior Shelbi Pipes had two ace serves and ju- nior Kenzie Dunn had one ace serve. Juniors Alyssa Jenkins and Taylor Lamey had one block each while senior Morgan Whann led the Lady Chargers in digs had a good shot at a trophy and they took to the chal- lenge to come away with the second-place trophy." HUFF SETS NEW PR AS CHARGERS PLACE FOURTH In the boys' division, Pike Central junior Draven Huff placed eighth out of 73 total runners with a personal re- cord time of 17:11, besting his previous PR time of 17:18. "Draven has been on a roll, dropping time off his PR the last four races now," Roach said. In addition, Chargers se- nior Caden Armstrong fin- ished 17th with a season-best time of 18:05; Chargers freshman Ijaa Chambers finished 19th with a time of 18:11; Chargers freshman Colt Armstrong placed 31st with a time of 18:50, tying his season-best time; Char- gers senior Jacob Bohnert finished 50th with a time of 20 :28; Chargers senior Gar- rett Manges finished 51st with a time of 20 :35; and Chargers sophomore A.J. Hill finished 53rd with a per- sonal record time of 20 :39, besting his previous PR time of 20 :49. Jasper sophomore Jack- son Miller placed first over- all with a time of 16:26. As a team, Pike Cen- tral placed fourth with 117 points, trailing Evansville Reitz (50 points), Jasper (64) and Princeton (110). North- east Dubois placed fifth with 120 points, followed by Mount Vernon (Posey) (134), Boonville and Washington (tied at 155) and Tecum- seh (247). Evansville Bosse, North Posey and Vincennes Lincoln also participated but did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score. In the boys' junior varsi- ty race, Chargers freshman Samuel Jones finished eighth with a season-best time of 20 :20 ; Chargers sophomore Sam Theising placed ninth with a personal record time of 20 :25, besting his previous PR time of 21:00 ; Chargers senior Lane Ridao placed 19th with a season-best time of 21:45; and Chargers fresh- man Lane Potts placed 20th with a season-best time of 22:02. "Both teams competed re- ally well tonight with a lot of PRs or best for this year be- ing put up," Roach said. "We really stressed that we got to see some sectional competi- tion tonight and I feel it real- ly stoked the competitive fire and got us going." "I'm very proud of the way both teams competed," Roach added. "Hopefully, this carries forward to the next few races and we are hitting our best stride come postseason."
