Email: egnews@pressdispatch.net Oakland City officially opened the Ed Rousch Me- morial Fitness Trail on Fri- day. The trail links Oakland City to Wirth Park by a trail from West St. to the park. It is a six-foot wide trail that is about a half-mile long. "Charlotte had a vision to get the kids off the high- way and now it has come to pass," said former Good Start member Neal Sisson. "When we had the idea for the trail, we had no idea it was going to become a life's work," said Charlotte Gray, president of Oakland City Good Start, about the project that has been in the planning for nearly 10 years. "It is great to see differ- ent organizations come together to do this," said Oakland City Mayor Hugh Wirth. Gray thanked a long line of volunteers, includ- ing the Good Start Com- mittee and several of the major donors such at Toy- ota TMMI, which donated $25,000, and Duke, which gave $10,000 to Oakland City for a fitness project that became the trail, Fifth Third Bank, which donat- ed their ATM property to the trail, and those who gave them easements for the property. "Oakland City the com- munity is important to Oak- land City University. Only by cooperation with each other are they able to be successful. This is an ex- ample of that," said OCU president Ray Barber. Gray said the trail is al- ready a hit. Even before it was officially open or com- pleted, she was seeing mothers and fathers with their kids on the trail, as well kids on bicycles and even motorized wheel- chairs using it. She said it was great to see them on the trail in- stead of having to use High- way 64 to get to Wirth Park. Charlotte Gray speaks while at the beginning of the trail with a bicycle, and Mayor Hugh Wirth be- hind her.
