Mattingly also heaped praise on each of the Char- gers' offensive linemen af- ter Pike Central piled up 449 yards in total offense, includ- ing 441 on the ground. "I'm very proud of our of- fensive linemen, across the board," said Mattingly, re- ferring by name to seniors Silas Goff, Zach Pancake, Tyler Vickers and Luke Vinnedge, sophomores Al - an Evans and Levi McCarter and freshman Josh McHar- gue. "Those men did a fan- tastic job tonight." "As a line, we were deter- mined," Vinnedge said. "We lost last week. It was a tough loss. It kind of lit a fire un- der us, and we just wanted to win." Forest Park (2-3 over- all, 0 -3 in PAC) took the game-opening kickoff and quickly moved the ball past midfield before Pike Cen- tral was flagged for a defen- sive pass interference pen- alty, giving the Rangers a first down at the Chargers' 30 -yard line. A fter Forest Park soph- omore running back Drew Day was stopped for a three- yard loss and senior quarter- back Noah Fleck threw an in- complete pass intended for senior tight end Braydon Voegerl, Fleck was sacked for an eight-yard loss by Fields, Vickers and junior linebacker Lane Doades. On 4th-and-21, Fleck at- tempted another pass to Voe- gerl, which fell incomplete, as the Rangers turned the ball over on downs with 8:12 left in the first period. A fter a 12-yard run by se- nior wide receiver Clint Bo- ger gave Pike Central a first down at the Forest Park 47-yard line, the Chargers – three plays later – facing 4th-and-1 from the Rangers' 38 -yard line, called a time- out with 5:22 remaining in the opening quarter. When play resumed, Al- vey kept the ball and ran for a four-yard gain, giving Pike Central a fresh set of downs at the Forest Park 34-yard line. Five plays later, Fields scored on a 13-yard run to give the Chargers – follow- ing Alvey's successful run for the two-point conversion – an 8 -0 lead with 2:21 left in the first period. The score would remain unchanged until Forest Park capped a five-play, 71-yard drive with a nine-yard touch- down run by Fleck with 9:14 left in the first half. Fleck ran for the two-point conversion, tying the score at 8 -8. Three plays later, howev- er, following runs of 2 and 50 yards by Alvey, Fields scored on a three-yard run, giving the Chargers a 14-8 lead with 7:52 left in the second peri- od. Forest Park, however, would start its next offen- sive possession at the Pike Central 47-yard line and would call five straight run- ning plays while advancing to the Chargers' 3-yard line. A fter senior wide receiver Sam Englert was stopped for a two-yard loss on 2nd-and- goal and Fleck was stopped for no gain on third down, the Rangers elected to go for the score on 4th-and-goal from the 5 -yard line. However, as Fleck dropped back to pass, he was tackled by Pike Central se- nior defensive lineman Jake Sisk, causing Fleck to fum- ble the ball. Fields picked up the loose ball at the 15 -yard line and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown, extending the Chargers' lead to 20 -8 with 3:18 left in the second peri- od. Pike Central was forced to kick off from its own 25 -yard line after the Chargers were flagged for a personal foul penalty following Fields' score, then were moved back another five yards because of an illegal procedure penalty. Rangers freshman run- ning back Jake Begle then fielded the ensuing kick by Pike Central junior Christian Benson at the Forest Park 45 -yard line and returned it to the Chargers 20 -yard line. Four plays later, Fleck scored on a two-yard run, cutting the deficit to 20 -14 with 1:16 remaining in the first half. Pike Central, not content to go into halftime with a six- point lead, quickly mounted another scoring threat when – on 1st-and-10 from the Chargers' 29 -yard line – Al- vey busted through the line and raced 58 yards before being tackled at the Rang- ers' 13-yard line. Three plays later, Alvey connected with sophomore wide receiver Connor O'Neal for a three-yard touchdown pass, giving Pike Central a 26 -14 lead with 23 seconds left in the second period. The Chargers would score on its first two possessions of the second half – on a three- yard run by Alvey with 10 :28 left in the third period (fol- lowed by Alvey's pass to ju- nior wide receiver Ju- dah Leathco for the two-point conversion) and a 14-yard touch- down run by Alvey with 7:01 remaining in the third period – to ex- tend their lead to 40 -14. A fter Forest Park scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Fleck to sopho- more wide receiver Jared Schipp to pull to within 40 - 20 with 5:27 left in the third period, Pike Central – start- ing at its own 20 -yard line – strung together a nine-play, 80 -yard drive that culminat- ed in a one-yard touchdown run by Fields to give the Chargers a 46 -20 lead with 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Rangers ended the scoring on the first play of the fourth period, when Fleck connected with se - nior wide receiver Sam En- glert on a 30 -yard touch- down pass, cutting the defi- cit to 46 -26 with 11:50 left in the contest. The ensuing on-side kick was recovered by Pike Cen - tral at its own 46 -yard line. The Chargers would keep the clock moving, calling 15 straight running plays be- fore – on 2nd-and-goal from Forest Park's 5 -yard line – Alvey took a knee on back- to-back snaps to end the game. Fleck led Forest Park of- fensively, rushing for 54 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries while complet- ing six of 12 pass attempts for 120 yards and two touch- downs. Englert caught four passes for 89 yards and one touchdown, while Schipp had one reception for 22 yards and one touchdown. "Forest Park's a great team," Mattingly said. "We played hard, but a couple of things go a little differently early on, it's a different ball- game." "The defense came out and we got a big stop and that just kind of helped us out," Vinnedge said. "I think we just wanted it a little bit more than they did." While the Chargers played turnover-free football against Forest Park, Mat- tingly was less than pleased with the fact that Pike Cen- tral was flagged 12 times for a loss of 134 yards. "We ended up getting three personal fouls in the game," Mattingly said. "No matter what happens, you've got to keep your cool and play football. We're here to win a football game, not do other things. So we've got to keep that focus." "I don't know if they were accurate calls," Matting- ly added. "I trust the offi- cials that they were, but I al- so trust what my guys were saying to me on the sideline, too. It's part of the game. You've just got to move on from it. In the end, you can't have selfish play, though." Pike Central will return to action on Friday, Sept. 22, when the Chargers will host South Spencer. Fall Home- coming festivities will start at 7 p.m., with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. The Rebels – who dropped a 56 -7 loss to Southridge last week – enter the contest 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the PAC. "South Spencer has a his- tory of playing some good football," Mattingly said. "I coached against them when I was at Boonville, so I know the talent that's there, and the coaches there do a great job, too." Vinnedge said that he and his teammates were looking forward to Friday night's game. "We feel pumped and in- spired," Vinnedge said. "We lost one of those winnable games and that just makes you want to win another one. So, we'll see. It's going to be a good game, though." PCMS football teams swept by Heritage Hills The Pike Central Mid- dle School seventh and eighth grade football teams fell to visiting Her- itage Hills on Thursday, Sept. 14. The Patriots won the seventh grade contest 30 - 0, dropping the Chargers to 2-2 with their second consecutive loss. "We drove the ball the length of the field twice through the air, but came up empty both times due to costly mistakes," Pike Central head coach Jere- my Howald said. In the eighth grade game, the score was tied at 8 -8 in the third quar- ter before Heritage Hills pulled away for a 36 -14 win. "It was probably the best football I have seen this group play," How- ald said. "It started to fall apart as the game pro- gressed due to tiredness and silly, silly mistakes." The eighth grade team fell to 1-3. "I'm very proud of the eighth graders this week," Howald said. "They fought a hard bat- tle and gave all that they had. The seventh graders tackled very poorly this week and did not capital- ize on opportunities, and the score reflected that." Pike Central will re- turn to action on Thurs- day, Sept. 21, when it will host North Posey starting at 6:30 p.m. Pike Central High School sophomore running back Mario Fields (5) tries to get through Forest Park junior defensive back Nathan Hamilton (left), sophomore linebacker Corbin Bell (25) and junior defensive line- man Nick Werner (right) during football game action on Friday, Sept. 16.
