Lamey added six kills while Jenkins had four kills and one block. Pipes led Pike Central in ace serves (2) and set-assists (8) while Crow, who had five set-as- sists, and Whann both had one ace serve. Whann had a team-high 13 digs while Sorgius added 12. Crow had nine digs, Pipes had seven and junior Alex Tray- lor had five. "It was a close game at the beginning of each set, then towards the middle, we pulled ahead on a cou- ple of good service aces," Walton said. "The girls again played very well with some strong attacks and great defensive plays." The Lady Chargers closed out the day with a 25 -18, 25 -18 win over East- ern Greene. Nalley scored a team-high six points – on four kills and two ace serves – while Pipes add- ed six kills. Crow had five points on three kills and two ace serves and Lamey had four kills. Jenkins and junior Kylie Dawson both had three kills. Crow had 10 set-assists while Pipes had five. Pipes and Whann both had 11 digs. "They had a couple of tall middle blockers that we had to learn to hit around," Walton said. "The girls adapted very well. They were helping each other out by telling them where the holes were on Eastern Greene's defense. We hit the ball very well and were able to get a lot of points on tips." "They played an amaz- ing tourney all day," Wal- ton added. "They had fun doing it and it paid off very nicely with a tourney win! " Pike Central, which im- proved to 8 -13, traveled to Vincennes Rivet on Tues- day, Sept. 19. At No. 1 singles, Chargers senior Jackson Keepes de- feated Pioneers junior Ben Meier 3-6, 7-5, 6 -1. At No. 2 singles, Chargers senior Carlos Stewart de- feated Pioneers sophomore Zeb Miles 6 -4, 6 -3. Lady Chargers hold off Princeton for five-set win Senior Shelbi Pipes scored a team-high 15 points as the Pike Central High School volleyball team defeated host Princeton 25 - 18, 25 -23, 16 -25, 19 -25, 15 - 13 on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Pipes had six kills and dished out a team-high nine ace serves during the five-set match. Junior Alys- sa Jenkins netted 13 points on eight kills and a team- high five blocks, while ju- nior Taylor Lamey scored 12 points on two blocks and a team-high 10 kills. Senior Brook Nalley tal- lied eight points on four kills and four blocks, and ju- nior Becca Crow scored five points on four ace serves and one kill. Crow and Pipes both dealt out 10 set-assists while Jenkins had two. Se- nior Morgan Whann led the Lady Chargers in digs with 30 while Crow added 21, senior Peyton Sorgius had 19, junior Alex Traylor had 12 and junior Kenzie Dunn had 11. "We came out very strong in the first set," Pike Cen- tral head coach Tonya Wal- ton said. "They were pass- ing great and hitting ag- gressively. We struggled in the second set with pass- ing but ended up with the win. The third and fourth sets, we had a hard time connecting offensively and Princeton was able to get the points. Princeton played well defensively. The fifth set, we played much better. We passed well, which led our offense to get some real- ly good hits in as well." "Overall, it was a decent match and the girls fought hard for every point," added Walton, whose team ended a five-match losing streak while improving to 5 -13. "They worked well togeth- er to pull out a win." In the junior varsity match, Princeton defeated the Lady Chargers 25 -22, 21-25, 15 -9. Sophomores Aubrie Dawson (one ace serve, three kills), Alex- is Englert (one ace serve, three kills), Karsyn Pipes (two ace serves, two kills) and Emma Russell (two ace serves, two kills) led Pike Central in scoring with four points each. Sophomore Au- drey Keepes had three kills. Russell dished out a team-high seven set-assists while Keepes led the Lady Chargers with 17 digs. Daw- son, Pipes and Russell add- ed 10 digs each. PCMS 6th grade volleyball team rallies for win over Francisco Having given up a 12-point lead while dropping a first-set loss at Francisco on Tuesday, Sept. 12, the Pike Central Middle School sixth grade volleyball team, trailing 22-20 in the second set, appeared headed for a straight-set loss. The Lady Chargers, how- ever, would score five of the next six points – including two on serves by Karley Ka- vanaugh – to rally for a 25 - 23 win, forcing a tie-break- ing third set. Falling behind 7-1 at the start of the penultimate set, Pike Central would close to within two points – at 10 -8 – before the Lady Owls scored back-to-back points to ex- tend their lead to 12-8. The Lady Chargers would battle back, scoring five straight points – including four on serves by Madelyn Lansford – to take a 13-12 lead. Then, after Francisco tied the score at 13-13, Pike Central scored two straight points – including one on a serve by Kavanaugh – to win the third set 15 -13. For the match, Kavana- ugh had a team-high 16 ser- vice points while Lansford and Macey Stilwell added five each. Shelby Meadows and Brailey Mills tallied four service points apiece. "Madelyn Lansford had some crucial serves near the end of the game to help us pull out the win," said Lady Chargers head coach Steph- anie Shedd, whose team im- proved to 3-2. "They were moving and playing well to- gether on the court the last two sets. It was definitely a team effort! " In the "B" match, Pike Central fell to 1-2 with a 15 - 6, 15 -4 loss to Francisco. Athalee Loveless had the Lady Chargers' only ser- vice point. "The B-team struggled with serving the entire match," Shedd said. "But they played hard and put a lot of effort into the match." Pike Central, which host- ed North Knox on Monday, Sept. 18, will return to ac- tion on Wednesday, Sept. 27, when the Lady Chargers will host Vincennes Clark, and on Thursday, Sept. 28, when they will host Haubstadt. PCMS cross country teams compete at Vincennes Clark Fifth graders Xavery Weisman and Kaylyn War- ner placed third and fourth, respectively, as the Pike Central Middle School girls' cross country team finished second in a dual meet host- ed by Vincennes Clark on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Weisman finished with a time of 13:08 while Warner finished with a time of 13:37. "The girls did a great job of running in pairs and packs this evening," Pike Central head coach Brid- get Butcher said. "Xavery, although she did not finish with a time she was person- ally happy with, raced very well. Kaylyn kept Xavery in very close contact the entire race and made sure to finish in fourth place with a time of 13:37. " In addition, eighth grader Quinlan Teague placed 11th with a time of 14:30 ; Anna Whitehead placed 13th with a time of 14:36; fifth grad- er Izzy Luker placed 14th with a time of 14:37; sixth grader Ruby Sallee placed 16th with a time of 14:39; and sixth grader Lexie On- yett placed 17th with a time of 14:58. "Anna Whitehead, Ru- by Sallee, Izzy Luker and Lexie Onyett stuck togeth- er like a pack of wolves this evening," Butcher said. "It was exciting and very en- joyable to watch these la- dies stay together and push themselves. Although there was a group of Lady Alices in front of them, they never let a Lady Alice pass their pack." "Destiny Jack- son and Hailey Parker also had two great finishes us- ing perfect running form to stride out the last 400 yards to finish off the night." As a team, Pike Central scored 40 points, placing second behind Vincennes Clark's 21 points. BOYS In the boys' race, seventh grader Dallas Reutepohler finished sixth with a time of 12:51 and fifth grader Blaine Barnett finished sev- enth with a time of 13:14 as the Chargers dropped a 15 - 46 loss to the Alices. "Dallas and Blaine did a great job of staying together throughout the whole race," Butcher said. "Dallas fought hard for a number six spot and Blaine was always right behind him, pushing him forward." In addition, sixth grad- er Wyatt Luff finished 10th with a time of 14:15; fourth grader Brayden Hartley placed 12th with a time of 15:05; fourth grader Garry Anderson placed 19th with a time of 20 :18; and fifth grad- er Carter McCain placed 20th with a time of 20 :23. "Brayden finished very well and sprinted toward the finish line just as I asked him to do," Butcher said. "Garry and Carter have been together all season long, pushing themselves to get better, stronger and faster times with each race. Although times were a lit- tle slower this evening, Car- ter shaved off nine seconds from last Thursday's race and Garry beat last week's time by a second." "We had several chanc- es to score goals, but just couldn't get one in the net," Chad Western said. "Our of- fense played well with Jacob Barber, Hunter Capehart, Sam Henson, Connor Young and Paxton Knies creating several chances, but just had trouble finishing our oppor- tunities." "Our defense was strong the whole game with great play coming from Noah Whann, Jersey Mills, Jaden Montgomery, Austin Dix- on, Gabe Caldwell, Connor Gaines and Carson John- son," he added.
