Paul Armstrong, 70, talks on his cellphone following a crash at about 4 p.m. Wednesday on highway 61. Pike County Sheriff's Sgt. Dallas Killian said Armstrong was driving south when he ran off the right side of the road, hitting the pole. CANNON Continued from page 11 Chase Rice." "I never really got hired. They just said, 'we will see how it goes for a couple of days.'" That was almost four years ago. Cannon still lives in Pike County, works mostly in Nashville, but travels all over the country with Rice. He films him doing whatev- er he does, whether it is con- certs or behind the scenes. CR24-7 is one of Cannon's mainstays. It is kind of a day in the life of Rice. "I put up a video on Youtube® every two weeks." While Cannon never went to college to prepare for his career, he has been to more colleges than even the most scholarly of his classmates. Rice does lots of concerts at colleges. He played football for North Carolina, toyed with professional football and a career in NASCAR on a pitcrew before becoming a country musician. He also is a workout fanatic. So while traveling 250 days a year, Rice meets football person- nel and equipment manag- ers, who get Rice and his entourage into the weight rooms. Top level weight rooms at places like Ohio State, Michigan, Nebras- ka, Alabama. "It works well for both of them. The equip- ment managers get their pic- ture with Chase and he gets to work out." Cannon said he loves be- ing able to continue to live in Pike County and travel and work at his dream job. "I was like everyone else when I was kid. I thought it was bor- ing here. But I have been all over the world. I lived in L A, Boston and even been to the DMZ in Korea. It isn't any more boring here than any- where else." He said he often has peo- ple tell him, "You are from Indiana, you need to get cul- tured." He said everyone is judged for things they can't control, like where they are from. "For me it has always been being a midwest kid, gullible, green behind the ears." Cannon offers encourage- ment to people who let these kinds of things hold them back. "I'm like, 'No, you just don't want it enough. I have the funniest accent. I use weird words my grandfa- ther used. But if they would just use half the effort they do telling everyone how held down they are, to accom- plish something, they could be the richest people in the world." Cannon isn't the richest person in the world and says he isn't in it for fame and for- tune. But he his grateful for his opportunity and loving what he is doing. Last month Cody Cannon toured Korea and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) during the peak of rhetoric between the United States and North Korea. Above and below are buildings in the DMZ. Petersburg native Cody Cannon photographs Chase Rice singing behind the scenes.
