Ed Cahill photo. Chargers fail to finish in 42-3 loss By Ed Cahill sports@pressdispatch.net The word of the week for the Pike Central High School football team is "finish." Charger head coach Dustin Powell used a variation of the word about a dozen times during a postgame interview after host Heritage Hills scored on its first six possessions and cruised to a 42-3 victory on Friday, Sept. 6. The Patriots' seventh, and final, possession ended inside Pike Central's 10-yard line, when Heritage Hills sophomore quarterback Kenton Crews took a knee on the final two plays to run out the clock. On offense, the Chargers managed to drive into Patriot territory on five of their seven possessions, including once to Heritage Hills' 1-yard line, but were unable to push the ball into the end zone. Pike Central's only points came on a 23-yard field goal by senior Colton Corlett with 5:54 left in the game. "It doesn't matter how you put it or what you talk about, defense, offense, special teams, whatever, you've got to finish," said Powell, whose Chargers fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. "When you get your head on somebody, you've got to finish that tackle. When you hit that hole, you've got to finish that run. That's going to be the thing this week. We've got to finish!" "This is the same talk we have every year, at some point, that we've got to finish," Powell added. "We couldn't have that talk after Week One. Week Two, we had more opportunities to have that talk. Then, today, we didn't get it in the end zone, but, you know, we had opportunities where we were moving them back. It's there. It's there. And that's what I tell the kids. This group's got a chance to be a solid group, and it's just a matter, over these next few weeks, of finishing." "Her mom has come to a couple of games and my parents are always here because my little brother plays," McCord said. "So we had the cameras and, because it being a sport- ing event, it wasn't conspicuous at all." McCord's postgame marriage proposal alleviated only some of the sting of the loss to the Golden Arrows. Sullivan senior Luke McPhail scored five goals while seniors Ryan Nail and Noble Harrison added one each as the Golden Arrows outshot Pike Central 26-12.
