"The runners were disappointed with their times at both Terre Haute and Southridge," said Pike Central Head Coach Jessica Hadley. "But starting with our first home meet last Tuesday, their hard work over the summer started to show as their times started to drop." Hadley said that she was pleased with how her teams performed at the Gibson Southern Class Invitational. "We could not score in either junior/senior race, but all of the kids showed improvement," Hadley said. "One runner who really gave us a glimpse of her ability was Kaylee Gray, who at the first meet ran in the 29's, and on Thursday ran 24:04, cutting off over five minutes in less than two weeks. "All of the kids ran great last week and we expect to continue to see improvements as the season continues," Hadley added. The Chargers, who hosted North Daviess, Washington Catholic and South Knox on Tuesday, Sept. 10, will compete in the Heritage Hills Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14, and the Princeton Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The Lady Chargers, who played at Wood Memorial on Tuesday, Sept. 10, will host Springs Valley tonight beginning at 6:30 p.m., and Southridge on Thursday, Sept. 12, beginning at 6 p.m. Lady kickers split with S. Spencer, Boonville By Ed Cahill sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School girls' soccer team split a pair of matches last week, defeating visiting South Spencer 2-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and dropping a 5-2 loss at Boonville on Thursday, Sept. 5. Freshman Madison Scott scored both goals in Tuesday's victory over the Lady Rebels, with sophomore Ally Sutherland and freshman Amy Chastain getting the assists, while sophomore goalie Presley Bryant had 19 saves. The Lady Chargers' defense, led by senior Lauren Luff, had nine saves. "The girls played really well after a long weekend off," said Pike Central Head Coach Alisha Knight, whose team improved to 2-4 overall while winning its Pocket Athletic Conference opener. "They really showed me what they have this game. "Madison dominated offensively," Knight added. "We pretty much controlled the ball the entire first half. The second half, South Spencer started to fight back and finally scored. The girls held strong and fought till the end. Lauren did excellent controlling my defense. Excellent game!" Two days later, Boonville's Rachel Hendrickson scored four goals, while Allie Washburn added another to lead the Lady Pioneers to a 5-2 win over Pike Central. Scott scored both of the Lady Chargers' goals, including one off an assist by junior Allison Sheffler, while Bryant recorded 27 saves in goal. "This was a tough game," said Knight. "We seemed tired. They got up on us fast and we had to fight to keep in this game. Injuries really plagued us; we had three girls sitting on the bench icing by the end of the game and plenty of others with minor injuries. Presley Bryant . . . really kept this game from getting out of control." The two goals by Scott gave her 14 for the season, to go along with two assists. "Madison Scott has had an outstanding year," Knight said. "She fights hard. She scored her second goal with four girls on her and she was completely off balance. She's young but has so much talent. She will be unstoppable by her senior year." Knight said that she was also pleased with the play of sophomore Amber Dixon, who was given the assignment of covering Hendrickson for most of the game. "Amber helped us out a lot this game," Knight said. (Hendrickson) just kept coming at us. She had an awesome shot. Amber is my go-to girl. She stuck on her and kept her from easy breakaway shots." "It's was just a rough game and my girls were clearly just not there 110 percent," Knight added. "Time to rest, regroup, and get back to it!" Pike Central will host Princeton on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m., then will travel to Washington on Monday, Sept. 16, and South Knox on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
