The Press-Dispatch Light agenda for City Council meeting By Mike Johansen The Stellar visit, water leaking into a home and concern with people getting unintended packages for neighbors were among the topics at the Petersburg City meetings Monday night. Police Chief Chuck Baumgart told the Petersburg City Council that they have been having a bit of a problem with people having packages sent to a neighbor's address, without that neighbor's permission, and then intercepting the package before the neighbor has realize what is happening. He noted this is very suspicious and some people use this method to have drugs or drug ingredients sent to them, but not have them arrive at their actual address. He asked that anyone noticing this happening should contact the Petersburg Police Department or any local police agency with the information so it can be investigated. This is another step in the war to fight illegal drug use in Pike County. The Petersburg Water Board approved having the City Council consider paying a claim for water leaking into a garage, and damaging a freezer and the beef in the freezer, as claimed by a resident. However, that resident, Derek Wood, would first have to supply proof of the damage he is claiming before the actual claim can be handled. City Services Manager Gary McCandless said he thinks the problem could have happened when they were fixing a water leak in the area, as they usually use a hose and run water the opposite way when they are clearing fire hydrants. The home is in a low lying area. Mayor Frank Coleman said they are still awaiting more information from the homeowner and proof of his loss before taking further action. The mayor and Fran Lewis both issued a big thank you to McCandless and his crew for their work on Saturday, as well as at other times the past couple of weeks getting ready for the Stellar visit. They also thanked R.C. Klipsch and others for their work. Klipsch also added his thanks to all those who helped, especially the city crews. The Stellar State Committee visits Petersburg this Wednesday to hear the proposal for what the grant money would be used. The Board of Public Works and Safety and the Petersburg City Council both gave their approval to spending $3,785 for a new flow meter for the sewer plant. The old one broke down and it is obsolete. Mayor Coleman said they are meeting with Synergy next week concerning problems with the gas pump and gas usage for the city to see if they can solve a problem. If not, they will take other measures to supply gas for city vehicles. Brian Bullock of Midwestern Engineering said they are just about finished drawing up the plans for $1 million in storm water work to be done in the city. They expect to go to bid on the projects in June. Petersburg received a grant for the work that covers all the costs. Code enforcement officer Klipsch said they have sent out several letters regarding high weeds in yards around town. Several have responded by mowing the problem area, but the city may have to take care of a few places.
