Postcards We have received two postcards this week. The first postcard #589 has a view of a rail fence zig zagging through a field of wheat, dotted with brush and in the background is the Sawtooth Mountains, with the early morning sun in central Idaho's McGowan Peak. On the back it says, "Hi Sweets, have a nice summer, I plan to!"— Janie Tormohlen. Postcard #590 has a view of some rocks, which is balancing other sizes of rocks with a caption "Balance Rock, Idaho." Balance Rock is near Castleford and Buhl, Idaho. "This natural stone formation looms high above the surrounding desert. The rock if 48 ft. high, 40 ft. wide, and at the base only three ft. by 17-1/2 inches. It may be reached by turning off U.S. Highway 84 at Buhl." On the back it reads, "Hi Sweets, have a good day!"— Janie Tormohlen. Hi Janie, and thanks for postcards #589 and #590 from Idaho and from the attractions in Idaho. I'm very sure that your summer will be grand and hope you have loads of fun. If you want to say "hi" to all our stars around the world, the address is Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598. I also receive birthday and anniversary dates if you care to share them. Last week was a busy week for Pike County with the Clean-Up that lasted four days, and then there was some entertainment at the Jam Session at The Trading Post and Winslow Demo Derby. Many groups in Winslow are trying to regain their membership to help this small town grow, but if the town and its citizens won't act on some fundraisers, we could end up like we thought we were when half the town burnt. So help these groups and rebuild the town of Winslow. It doesn't always require much money, but the effort to do it will help quite a lot. Some of us citizens haven't given up, so get involved or volunteer your service to help Winslow grow again. Norm and I have some exciting news as we won tickets to the Indy 500! Wow and thanks! Here is how that happened. Mark Messmer had two tickets to the Indy 500, but wasn't going to attend. He posted on Facebook, "If you want a chance to win them put your name in." Out of 35 names posted online, ours included, we won. Yes, we won the two tickets, so we're off to the Indy 500. I can't wait to tell you the story of that day. As the lights begin to dim for this week, keep an eye on family and friends, slow down more since the schools are out for the school year and more kids are outside playing. Remember to honor the fallen veterans of all the branches of service, then always smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone this week. NETedition Exclusive video Petersburg Elementary Fun Day This inflatable contraption was one of the things all the kids at the Petersburg Elementary School Fun Day last week got to try. They had many other games and a full day outside the school enjoying the sun. Above: Dietrich Dunigan, Garrett Snipes and Tyler Black got to enjoy a sweet and cool treat while resting from trying the various activities at the Petersburg Elementary School Fun Day last week. Left: Ian Bryan was all smiles as he slides down the inflatable at the Petersburg Elementary School Fun Day last week. Each of the kids in each class got to go through this fun maze and enjoyed doing it. Members of one class at Petersburg Elementary tried out the hoola hoops that were part of the day's activities. The kids enjoyed a day of fun and games as a reward for a good year of school and their stellar performance in the ISTEP tests. ★ Church news Continued from page 6 Petersburg Free Methodist Church This week we concluded our normal Wednesday night teen and children's ministries for the summer. Family night was amazing and we had a larger turnout than we anticipated. Everyone who helped with the planning and serving did a great job. We also had a celebration for our Grads on Sunday. We had a time of fellowship and food and watched a video of our two high school graduates as they grew up. During the summer, we will be starting a drama and skit team. I would encourage any kid from fifth grade to graduation to contact me regarding this opportunity. This is especially good for those kids who are not involved every night with sports. We will do drama, video and skits. If you want to be behind the scenes, we can use help in lots of areas that don't require performance. You do not have to attend our church regularly to participate. Adults who would like to assist will go through the standard criminal background check. Leave a message on the church answering machine if you are interested—354-6646. We have a new Sunday school class in the old fellowship hall. Bring your own coffee. We are studying some of the basics of the Christian faith and how they can make our lives more meaningful and productive. So far class participation has been great. We also have a new study starting Wednesday, May 29. The study will be based on Made to Crave, "Satisfying your deepest desire with God, not food." The group will begin at 6:30 p.m. Several women have signed up and I believe this is going to be a big help to those involved. Starting at 8 a.m., June 1, we will be having a church work day. VBS will be June 24-28 from 6-8:30 p.m. The theme for the year will be "Kingdom Rock." Our normal weekly schedule is as follows: Sunday school starts at 9:30 a.m., with morning worship following at 10:15 a.m. ; Sunday night at 6 p.m., we have a casual evening service. Monday at 6:30 p.m. the Study Buddies meet in the new fellowship hall and an exercise group meets in the old fellowship hall. Thursday at 4 p.m. the Knitwits meet to knit and crochet. Peace and joy in the Lord. Mark Schlechty, Pastor PETERSBURG CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE 118 West Pike Ave. 354-8851—Church We invite you to join us in all our services. Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship 10:30 a.m.; evening worship 6 p.m.; Wednesday, adult Bible study/prayer 7 p.m. Vacation Bible School 6:30 p.m. nightly, June 10-14. The definitive comic book character is Superman. He has all of the amazing powers, but what makes him so intriguing to me is his disguise as Clark Kent. He would behave as Clark Kent as he went about normal human living, but when the need arose, he'd tear off the suit and fly off in his blue spandex to save the day. We tend to think of Jesus in the same way. I mean, He walked around in His little human suit, and whenever He had to do human things, like some carpentry, He was human Jesus. However, then when the supernatural was necessary, the buttons of His human suit popped off revealing the big "G" (for God) on His chest. The Super Jesus God would do all this amazing stuff and then when that was all taken care of, He went back into His carpenter clothes—just like Superman putting on his tie and suit to become Clark Kent again. But that's not what we get from Scripture at all: So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me" (John 8:28). Jesus is fully God, yet He chose to live a life of complete dependency on the Father. He could have chosen to assume His God powers at any time, but He chose instead to remain wholly dependent on the Father. He was modeling complete faith dependence on God. We are not called to live super-human lives through our own hidden powers. We are designed to live in dependence on God. When we are weak, He is strong. When we are foolish, He is wise. When we don't know what to say, He gives us the words. We are the students and He is the teacher, telling us—if we are willing to listen—which way to go. Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me what it looks like to completely depend on the power of God. Reveal to me the ways that I try to be independent of You. Thank You for forgiving me of that. Lead me into a more intimate and dependent relationship. I want to have a heart like Yours was while you were on earth, one that is completely dependent on a completely dependable Father—Amen. Devotion written by Rev. Don Collins. www.petersburgnaz.net.
