The Press-Dispatch
Lady Chargers track
and field tops a pair
By Mike Johansen
After a week off because
of rainy days, the Pike Central Lady Chargers got back
on the track and dominated
Wood Memorial and South
Spencer in a three way meet
at home Monday night.
Pike Central scored 102
points, Wood Memorial 42
and South Spencer 22.
"Last night's meet went
pretty well considering we
haven't ran since last Monday and didn't get a practice in over the last 4 days.
We won 12 of 16 events and
swept two of the events with
first, second and third place
finishers. Our times were
slower yesterday than in previous meets but it was still
enough to win. I hope the
weather holds off this week
so we can run the PC Relays
on Thursday. A couple of
notes from Monday night's
meet was a season best
discus distance for Janessa
Foster of 102'7" and junior
Aubrey Marrs, who has never pole vaulted before this
year and has only jumped
in three meets, cleared 7-6
in a jump off with one of our
own girls, Olivia Leighty. I'm
proud of the girls and look
forward to improving this
week in practice," said Head
Coach Chris Hadley.
Foster took first place in
the discus event with the
102-7, her best of the season. Cheyenne Brewster
was third with a best throw
of 87-3, also one of her best
this season. Foster was also
first in the shot put with a
top throw of 32-9, and Kalee
Hadley was third at 27-3.
Michal Ashby won the
long jump with a best for
the day of 14-2 and Olivia
Leighty was second at 14-1.
Marrs finished first in the
pole vault in the jump off at
7-6, Leighty was second at
7-0, and Padgett third at 6-6.
Selena Guzman picked
up first place in the 3,200
with a time of 14:59, and
Lauryn Davis was second
in 15:20. Guzman was third
in the 1,600 in 6:28, and
Kaylee Gray fourth in 7:04.
Makaila Mason finished sec-
ond in the 800 meter run in
2:48.84, with Guzman third
at 2:52.58, and Gray fourth
in 3:12.95.
Ashby finished first in the
400 dash in 1:06.20, with Davis fourth in 1:20.84.
Kaylee Hadley was first in
the 200 meter dash clocked
at 29.34 seconds. She was
also first in the 100 dash in
13.83, with Taylor Hinton
fourth in 14:54.
Nicah McFarland won the
100 hurdles with a time of
19.38, Brewster was second
at 20.19, and third went to
Ivy Sullivan in 20.96. McFarland also won the 300 meter
hurdles in 56.30, with Sullivan second at 58.91, and
Brewster third at 1:00.43.
The Lady Chargers won
the 1,600 relay with Leighty,
Mason, McFarland and Ashby running it in 4:39.78. The
team of McFarland, Ashby,
Leighty and Hadley won the
400 relay in 54.03. The 3,200
relay team of Mason, Marrs,
Harley Brinkman and Candie Miller was second in
13:40.
Kalee Hadley, center, works hard during a 100 meter dash race in an
early season meet. She won the 100 and 200 dashes on Monday.
PC physicals are this evening
The annual sports physicals for any student-athletes
going into grades 6 through
12 for the school year 201314 will be on Wednesday,
April 17, at Pike Central
Middle School.
The physicals will be from
5:30 to 8 p.m. at the middle school at a cost of $15
(checks payable to PC Athletics). The physicals are for
students who plan to participate in a high school or middle school sport any time
during the year. All students
are required to sign in by
grade level and will be seen
on a first-come, first-serve
basis. Students participating in a PCSC sports event
during the time physicals
are being conducted will be
worked in accordingly.
Students must have an
IHSAA physical form. The
medical history, consent, acknowledgement and release
areas must be completed.
All forms must be signed by
the parent and the information area must be completed
before the physical will be
administered. The forms
will be filed with the athletic offices and will be available that evening or can be
picked up in advance from
the athletic department or at
the school nurse's office.
If you have questions
regarding the sports physicals, contact the school
athletic directors or any
school nurse's office. This
is the only time they will be
offered at PCMS or PCHS
for the 2013-14 school year.
Physicals include height,
weight, blood pressure, vision screening and physical
examination.
The physical forms will be
kept on file at school with a
copy of the exam and provided to any parent upon
request. Students obtaining
a sports physical exam from
their personal physician
for the 2013-14 school year
must use the IHSAA form.
For the IHSAA form to be
valid for the 2013-14 school
year, it cannot be completed
before April 1, 2013. The
forms must be signed by a
licensed physician. Other
forms will not be accepted.
A sports physical must be
on file in order for a student
to participate in any sport
during the 2013-2014 school
year and also to compete in
summer workouts in 2013.
This will be the only chance
for a low cost exam.
The phgysicals are for all
sports and student-athletes
must have them before participating in summer activities.
It is important that all
football, volleyball, boys and
girls soccer players, golfers
and cheerleaders have these
physicals to be ready for
summer worko0uts and fall
proactices. Fall practices for
most sports begin the final
few days of July.
Jacob Marchino winds up to deliver a pitch against North Daviess in a
home game Saturday. He had a few strike outs and got the win.
Chargers middle school
baseball crew wins three
By Mike Johansen
The fiurst week of the
baseball season was a success for the Pike Central
Middle School Changers as
they downed Barr-Reeve,
North Daviess and Northeast Dubois.
The Chargers downed
the Barr-Reeve Vikings 5-2
in their opening game of the
season on the road. They
had solid pitching by Chase
Davis and Colton White giving up only three hits and a
walk. "We had pretty good
defensive effort for the first
game. We only had five hits
but they were very timely
hits," said Head Coach
Dustin Powell.
Colton O'Neal was three
for three with two RBI's.
White and Jacob Marchino
had the other hits.
The Chargers scored a
lot of runs early in downing
the North Daviess Cougars
16-6 in the home opener on
Saturday afternoon.
"We had a solid effort on
the mound by Jacob Marchi-
no with a complete game
win. Only three of the runs
they scored were earned,"
said the coach.
O'Neal had another good
day at the plate going three
for three with four RBI's.
Christian Alvey, Eli Eck,
Kane Osgatharp, Marchino,
Josh Riley, Caleb Miller and
Blake Carroll all added hits.
The Chargers middle
school baseball team competed thye week with a 9-4
win over Northeast Dubois
on Monday. We started off
a little slow in this one and
got down 3-0 pretty quick.
O'Neal calmed down and
our defense made the routine plays all night. We tied
it up in the third at 3-3 and
had a big six run fourth
inning to create some distance. O'Neal was solid on
the mound and we made
plays behind him. White
came in and gave us a good
fifth inning, said Coach
Powell. "Osgatharp had a
big day at the plate with
three hits and three RBI's;
Cameron Henson had a big
two RBI double to give us
some breathing room in the
fourth inning."
White and Riley had two
hits and Eck, O'Neal, Davis,
Jagger Montgomery and
Miller had one hit each.
"Our B team has been
competitive in their first
three games. Barr-Reeve
beat us 7-6 and we left some
runs on the bases in the fifth
inning. We have some young
guys that are learning some
different things, but they are
taking it in and really working at it. We have 25 kids out
and they are all doing a great
job," said Coach Powell.
"This has been a solid first
week of the season. The kids
are listening and doing what
is asked. If we stay solid on
the mound and continue to
make plays in the field, we
will give ourselves chances
every game."
