A-2 Wednesday, February 13, 2013 The Press-Dispatch H School board cuts costs Larry Bass walks along Main St. Petersburg in front of the courthouse carrying a sign that reads: Registered Sex Offender Who Bought Alcohol for Kids as part of his plea agreement. Bass sentenced for probation violation A Petersburg man was ordered to walk in front of the Pike County Courthouse displaying a neon orange sandwich sign stating Registered Sex Offender Who Bought Alcohol for Kids. Larry T. Bass, 29, entered a guilty plea in Pike Circuit Court to the charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Part of the plea agreement called for him to walk back and forth on the sidewalk along Main St. on the block of the courthouse from noon until 1 p.m. on Friday, February 8. Pike County Prosecutor Darrin McDonald said Bass was convicted in May 2010 of child molesting, a class C felony. He was sentenced at that time by Pike Circuit Court to five years in the Department of Corrections. Following his release from prison on that charge, Bass was arrested for buying juveniles vodka in September 2012 during the Winslow Community Fest. At the time of his arrest, he was serving an additional two-year term of probation. McDonalds news release states, the terms of Bass plea agreement call for him to serve 823 days in the Wabash Valley Work Release facility at Vincennes after his public demonstration. McDonald explained Bass will get one day of credit for every day of good behavior, making it possible for him to complete his sentence in half of the 823 days. McDonald added that inmates of Wabash Valley are required to pay for the cost of their incarceration Woman sentenced for solicitation scam A Daviess County woman has been sentenced to 10 years in a work release facility where she will be required to repay money that she and her husband stole from Pike County residents in a door-to-door solicitation scam. Rita Fraley, age 27, plead guilty to corrupt business influence, a class C felony, and two related counts of neglect of a dependent, a class D felony. Fraley appeared in Pike Circuit Court February 7, where she admitted that she and her husband Justin Fraley stole cash, medicine and jewelry from homes last July and August by pretending to solicit donations for charity. Fraley admitted to using her two children, ages 5 and 11, to gain entry into the homes as part of pleading guilty to two counts of neglect. She is ordered to repay $1,641.25 to the victims in restitution while she is in the Wabash Valley Regional Community Corrections program in Vincennes. Fraleys scam tactic was to gain entry to homes with her husband by asking for charity donations. They would ask to use the bathroom, then steal medicine out of medicine cabinets. They would also ask to pray with homeowners, then go through purses or wallets while the other was praying. Fraley worked her scam mostly in Petersburg apartment complexes, such as Brookfield Apartments near McDonalds and apartments on Nichols Avenue. USPS may end Saturday delivery A plan to end first class mail delivery on Saturdays was announced by the United States Postal Service last week. The USPS predicts it will save $2 billion a year. The plan could take affect on August 5. They will continue to deliver packages on Saturday and first class mail to post office boxes. Over the past several years, the Postal Service has advocated shifting to a fiveday delivery schedule for mail and packages. However, recent strong growth in package delivery led to the revised approach to maintain package delivery six days per week. Our customers see strong value in the national delivery platform we provide and maintaining a sixday delivery schedule for packages is an important part of that platform, said Donahoe. As consumers increasingly use and rely on delivery services especially due to the rise of ecommerce we can play an increasingly vital role as a delivery provider of choice, and as a driver of growth opportunities for Americas businesses. Once implemented during August of 2013, mail delivery to street addresses will occur Monday through Fri- day. Packages will continue to be delivered six days per week. Mail addressed to post office boxes would continue to be delivered on Saturdays. Post Offices currently open on Saturdays will remain open on Saturdays. The Postal Service made the announcement more than six months in advance of implementing five-day mail delivery schedule to give residential and business customers time to plan and adjust. The Postal Service plans to publish specific guidance in the near future for residential and business customers about its new delivery schedule. The board approved the recommendations that the coach be the bus driver of the small activity bus (an assistant or a parent could also drive the activity bus if they are approved by the school) and phasing in of health insurance costs for administrators with 10 percent of the cost added on May 1, with the determination on the remainder next year. The board also approved closing out accounts 700 and 710, which have not been used since 2003, and transferring their balances of $635,000 to the Rainy Day Fund. Randy Graham submitted his resignation as the boys and girls cross country coach for Pike Central High School. He has been the cross country coach at PCHS for many years. The board gave approval to that resignation and to the resignation of Allen Tegemeyer as a custodian. The board also passed a stricter policy on who can be issued passes to sports events. The policy contains a limit on the number of sports passes and to whom they are given. Anyone who works five or more events can receive one plus the school board members will receive two passes. H Machining champion Continued from page 1 VU for precision machining after he graduates from Pike Central. Morton said he first got involved in the trade because of his father and grandfather, but soon fell in love with it himself. Dads done it his whole life, he said. Thats what him and Grandpa always did. It interests me thoughI really enjoy this stuff. Morton has already worked during his freshman and sophomore years at Onyetts as a part-time machinist. He joined Pike Centrals machining program as a junior. I can sit in front of that lathe all day and just play around with it and learn new stuff every minute, he said. I want to see how far I can go on the CNC (machines), master them and learn all the computer software. Draw anything up you can imagine on the computer and put it on the machine, a five-axis mill can just make whatever you can fathom. He pointed to a table of parts made by students in the Pike Central machining lab. You see those parts up there, that rim, that steering wheelanything you can think up you can pretty much build, and thats justI want to learn that. At the Machine Trades contest, Morton won first place in the advanced precision machining programming division of the CNC Lathe competition, earning himself a $2,500 scholarship to VU, a toolbox, some machinists tools and a suite of software valued together at about $1,000. At the Skills USA contest, Morton won first place in the Precision Machining division, winning another $2,500 scholarship to VU. His classmates Alex Englert, Sam Steiner and Shayn Knies also did well in the competitions. Englert got a first in the CNC Lathe division and third overall at Machine Trades, and a first in the CNC Mill at Skills USA. Steiner got a third place in CNC Mill both at Machine Trades and at Skills USA. Knies got third place in precision machining at Skills USA. Englert, Steiner and Knies attend other high schoolsForest Park and Wood Memorialbut come to Pike Central for machining classes, since Pike Central offers college credit at VU for machining. Were basically doing the same thing in our first year here that VU does in their first semester, machining program teacher Mark Scott said. Kids take this a couple of years, then they can go straight to work. Theres opportunities for kids who might not want to go to a four-year college. They can either go to work or continue their education in machine trades. Scott said one of the important things about the contests his students attend is the employers that show up to look for young machinist talent, like Morton. We have a job fair at the Machine Trades contest. About 20 companies come to hire, and so theres more companies looking than we have graduates. At this years Machine Trades job fair, 15 Indiana Follow ThrouGh on TANNING SpecIAl 1 Month Any Bed your nEw yEarS rESoLutIon the GeT IN companies showed up, such as Prodigy Mold and Tool in Haubstadt, Loughmiller Machine Tool and Design in Loogootee and EBN Industrial Supply in Vincennes. Five companies from other states were talking to students about jobs as well. This is our third year (of the machine program at Pike Central), Scott said. I think weve put together in a short time a first-rate program. We have a good lab, good equipment, job opportunities and college credit. We just need kids to come in. Once he started up one of the CNC lathes in the Pike Central lab, Mortons face lit up and he started talking faster. He punched in some codes on the machine that made it trim down the size of a part and went through every step of the program which he wrote himself like a commentator at a horse track as the lathe followed its orders. See, you can watch each handle (on the machine) as it moves, he said over the whir of the lathe. Right now its doing the radius, you can see that feed out, now its doing the chamfer. The machine stopped, and he pulled the finished part out to show it off. Boom. End of the program. Morton said hed had that feeling ever since his first day in the Pike Central machining lab. Your first day in here, your junior year, youre kind of nervous... I was freaking out, he said. But when I left, I couldnt wait to get back the next day. $ Just 36 Select Supplements on Sale Now womens exercise Class TeAm wINNer with Jill Snyder Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 9 a.m. week 1&2 Booty Burners coNGrATulATIoNS! 24-Hour ACCeSS to fitNeSS CeNter witH key memberSHip the Gift Certificates Available 604 East Illinois St., Petersburg (near the Little League Park) 354-1303 Fitness Center Hours: Mon - Thurs 108 Fri 107 Sat 102 Closed Sunday
