On Rick Velotta's Jan. 17 vegasinc.com story about transportation experts saying that a proposed toll road around Boulder City wouldn't be used frequently ("Experts: Less than half of motorists would use toll road around Boulder City"): Traffic has been backed up for generations around Hoover Dam and through Boulder City. Everyone is used to it, and no one is going to pay to drive on this toll road. Not when you've got the already existing free route, and the fact that it is scenic as well. Now that the environmental study is done, how about an economic one that will show how many businesses will go bankrupt in Boulder City if a bypass is in place? Just look what happened to Route 66 when the interstate arrived. The same will happen to BC. — DMCVegas (Robert Rooney) Traffic isn't really that bad anymore. It's only on a few days a year after the major holidays. And then the backup is only for a few hours. I don't think we need to spend billions to ease a few busy days. Remember, you don't build a church for the crowds at Christmas and Easter. The trucks are a pain in the keester, but unless you force them to take the bypass, lots of them wouldn't pay the toll. — dave202 (Dave Griffith) On Eli Segall's Jan. 14 vegasinc.com story about the results of a safety inspection conducted by federal workplace safety regulators at Hoover Dam ("OSHA finds 60 alleged health, safety violations at Hoover Dam"): I had an opportunity to work at Hoover Dam years ago for a contractor, and noticed many safety issues then and was told that Hoover Dam came under a "grandfather clause." For the safety of employees, visitors and all, it is probably very good these issues where pointed out and better yet that the citations where written and will be corrected and penalties placed like what happens to others. Hopefully these citations will be posted for the public, and the people at Hoover Dam get their act together. — flyFisherman Safety starts with the leadership of the management for their employees to follow. Being proactive only protects the workers. If the safety process is not followed, then it tends to make one wonder what other areas are being neglected and what safety concerns are there in those areas. Not having a drill press secured is so easy to correct a caveman can do it. So that in itself speaks volumes for the integrity of management's leadership. I have worked with OSHA on many occasions. I have done wall-towall inspections with OSHA at the site I worked at, and not once did I see them go out of their way to damage or put a company out of business. If a serious accident or fatality happens here at the Hoover Dam site, the first thing everyone would be yelling is "Where was OSHA?"— irishspy (Barry Regan) 21 1/24/13 2:43:22 PM
