In business higher education nevada state college approved to expand its campus By Paul Takahashi staff writer Nevada's higher-education leaders approved construction of two new buildings on Nevada State College's campus. The school's student enrollment has surged from 177 students in 2002 to 3,389 students a decade later. With student growth expected to con- tinue, Nevada State College wants to consolidate its two campuses — located five miles apart — and build out its 509acre main campus in Henderson. "It's challenging to have a split campus," said Nevada State College President Bart Patterson. "We need to create a better student experience." Nevada State College will adopt a public-private, lease-purchase model to build out its main campus at a cost of about $61 million, with about $36  million coming from student fees — uncommon methods of paying for capital projects in public education. The Nevada System of Higher Educa- tion will lease a portion of the college's campus to a private developer, who will construct two new buildings and lease them back to NSHE for a 30-year term. The developer, to be determined by a competitive bidding process, will assume the risk of constructing two new buildings at the main campus. gaming palms pays $1 million in prostitution settlement By Ron Sylvester staff writer Two men arriving at the Moon Nightclub last March asked an employee to help them find women willing to have sex with them. Cost wasn't a concern, the customers said. The nightclub host complied. The cost to the Palms Casino Resort will be more than $1 million in fines and fees to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. The men being offered prostitutes and drugs by nightclub hosts, security guards and bottle runners were undercover officers. The Gaming Control Board detailed the activity in a 17-count complaint involving Moon, the former Rain and Ghostbar nightclubs, along with the Ditch Fridays pool parties. The Palms has agreed to pay the fines, while overhauling its security staff and club operations. The incidents in the complaint happened before the Palms took over ownership of the Nine Group, which manages nightlife, restaurants and the pools at the casino. Resort officials said the change allows the Palms greater control over employees in the clubs and its pool. "Nonetheless, Palms as a Nevada gaming licensee accepts full responsibility for all activities taking place on its property," casino officials said. The Palms has agreed to pay $1 million in fines and reimburse the state $78,000 in investigation fees. The casino also agreed to implement steps to prevent future infractions, including: n Drug testing for employees. n Disbanding the security unit at the nightclubs. It will be replaced by Palms security guards. n Enact an employee whistleblower hotline. | 28 JANUARY 2013 20130128_VI11_F.indd 11 | Re: Reinvent Fight Night TM From: Ring To: Octagon Ultimate Fighting Championship® had a knockout inspiration to radically change a sport and invent a new fight category.
