B-6 Sports Wednesday, October 10, 2018 The Press-Dispatch BOYS: Led by sopho- more Ijaa Chambers and Huff, who placed sixth and seventh, respectively, out of 69 runners, the Chargers finished third with 95 points, trailing only Gibson South- ern (54 points) and South Knox (58) points. Barr-Reeve finished fourth with 116 points, while Princeton was fifth with 125 points. Vincennes Lincoln (130 points) was sixth, followed by Washington (148), North Knox (222), Tecum- seh (238) and North Da- viess (262). Vincennes Riv- et and Washington Catho- lic also participated but did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score. The top five teams and the top 10 individuals from non-qualifying teams ad- vance to the regional meet. "We caught Barr-Reeve, and that was the goal that we told them ahead of time," said Roach. "We said Barr- Reeve is that team right in front of you and we've beat them a couple of times here recently, so, looking at that, it was, 'Hey, let's go beat them! '" A fter placing 10th during last year's sectional meet with a time of 17:54, Cham- bers completed the 3.1-mile course with a time of 17:45, while Huff – who placed 13th during last year's sec- tional meet with a time of 18:06 – posted a personal course record time of 17:46, beating his previous per- sonal course record time of 17:59 by 14 seconds. "I think Ijaa's beat Draven every time we've ran here, to be honest," Roach said. "We just call it Ijaa's course because he always does so well there. And that helps Draven because he kind of went out and was, like, 'I know that Ijaa's going to be there on this course, so I'm going to run with him.' And he was just a second be- hind him today, and that got Draven his best time on the course, too." "Ijaa really does a great job here," said Huff, who placed 22nd in the section- al meet with a time of 18:31 in 2016. "He likes these hills a lot. So I try to push with him." Chambers said that he was a little puzzled himself about why he does so well on the South Knox course. "I think it has to be at the very start, especially," Chambers said. "It starts as a nice, long path straight up to that hill, and you know everyone's wanting to go as fast as they can, up that hill and down it. That start just gives you a few good sec- onds or even a minute off your time." Chambers' sixth-place finish was the highest by a Charger since 2012, when then senior Cain Parker finished third. In addition, the last time two Chargers finished in the top 10 was in 2010, when then junior Chantz Parson and Park- er placed fifth and 10th, re- spectively. Junior Nate Woolery, who placed 47th in the sectional meet with a time of 20 :03 in 2016, finished 11th with a personal course record time of 18:14, beating his previ- ous personal course record time of 18:27 by 13 seconds. "Nate's a kid that you nev- er know how much he's go- ing to grow because he's still getting into it, finally getting a chance to show what he's capable of," Roach said. "We expected to have those three up there," Roach said of Chambers, Huff and Woolery. "They compete with each other and they push the whole time. That was a lot of fun, to watch those three at the beginning of the race." Sophomore Trent Zim- merman placed 30th over- all with a personal course record time of 20 :02, beat- ing his previous personal course record time of 21:28 by 86 seconds. "He's determined right now to jump up and help our team because he knows we need to shrink that gap," Roach said. "I saw him at the 3K mark and I knew at that point there were two Barr- Reeve kids that were pretty far ahead of him. I told him he's got to catch up to them." Zimmerman, Roach not- ed, finished 28 seconds be- hind Barr-Reeve junior Luke Lengacher and just 24 sec- onds behind Barr-Reeve junior Kaden Boyd, who placed 27th and 28th, re- spectively. "So he shrunk that gap, and those numbers are actu- ally kind of what helped us to overcome that, because they had, most of them, between Nate and Trent," Roach said. Sophomore Colt Arm- strong placed 39th with a time of 21:16; junior A.J. Hill, who finished 47th during the sectional meet in 2016 with a time of 21:28, placed 43rd with a time of 21:26; and junior Sam Theis- ing, who placed 41st during the sectional meet in 2016 with a time of 20 :37, placed 46th with a time of 22:04. Gibson Southern senior Travis Hart placed first overall with a time of 16:41. Princeton senior Jackson Krieg was second with a time of 17:09 while Gibson Southern junior Zach Pur- cell placed third with a time of 17:23. Qualifying as individu- als from a non-advancing team for Saturday's region- al meet were Vincennes Lin- coln junior Parker Mullins; Washington junior Isaac Gray; Washington junior Garrett Gray; Tecumseh ju- nior Clay Moore; Vincennes Lincoln freshman Blake Meade; Washington senior Elia Becerra; Vincennes Lincoln freshman Keenan Clegg; Vincennes Lincoln freshman Nate Harris; Vin- cennes Lincoln junior Trev- or Robbins; and North Knox junior Calvert Steven. The third-place finish as a team during the section- al meet was the Chargers' highest finish since 2008, when Pike Central placed second as a team for the third straight year. Both Chambers and Huff qualified as individuals to advance to the semi-state meet last year. "We really try to, in prac- tice, stay together and push up there so we can all move up to semi-state, hopefully," Huff said. "I'd really like to get a PR, maybe set a record or something like that." "I want to get back to semi-state," Chambers said. GIRLS: Sophomore Lib- by Stone and freshman Quinlan Teague placed sixth and 13th, respective- ly, out of 52 runners, as the Lady Chargers finished fourth with 86 points, trail- ing Barr-Reeve (19 points), South Knox (59) and Gibson Southern (76). Vincennes Lincoln (149) was fifth. Tecumseh (153 points) was sixth, followed by North Knox (177). North Daviess, Princeton and Washington also participated but did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score. "The girls did a really good job," Roach said. "We kind of simulate things out, and they actually shrank the gap a lot from the team ahead of them, Gibson Southern. Gibson South- ern's coach came up after the race and he was pretty worried." Stone completed the 3.1-mile course with a per- sonal course record time of 22:13, beating her previous personal course record time of 23:53 by 100 seconds, while Teague posted a per- sonal course record time of 23:17, beating her previous personal course record time of 24:18 by 61 seconds. "If you look at it, it was South Knox and then all Barr-Reeve and Libby," Roach said, noting that the Lady Vikings had four of the top five runners. "She really pushed and she knew com- ing into it that Barr-Reeve was going to be up there, and she was going to try to work her way through them as much as possible." "Quinlan all year long has been, 'I'm going to stay with Libby,' and has fought that fight," Roach added. "Libby's starting to maybe pull away from her a little earlier in the race, but that doesn't mean that Quinlan ever quits trying to stay up there, and she gets up there with them and she keeps pressing." Sophomore Charlotte Dudenhoeffer placed 21st with a personal course re- cord time of 23:55, beat- ing her previous person- al course record time of 24:47 by 52 seconds; soph- omore Jenna Meyer placed 24th with a personal course record time of 24:06, beat- ing her previous personal course record time of 24:36 by 30 seconds; Young placed 27th with a personal course record time of 24:13, beating her previous course record time of 24:26 by 13 seconds. Senior Erin Craig – who placed 44th during last year's sectional meet with a time of 26:02 and 44th during the sectional meet in 2016 with a time of 25:51 – placed 38th with a time of 26:44; and freshman Laney Johnson placed 39th with a personal course record time of 26:45, beating her previ- ous course record of 27:57 by 72 seconds. "Most of our runners were faster than they've actually ran ever at South Knox," Roach said. "That's a good thing. They can let the heat psyche them out sometimes. It's just hotter than it's been in the last two weeks was the only difference. So they kind of focused and regrouped. They were going to fight for those spots." Barr-Reeve freshman Makenna Pruett placed first overall with a time of 20 :30. Barr-Reeve senior Melissa Wagler was second with a time of 20 :56 while South Knox junior Mykay- la Couchenour placed third with a time of 21:04. Qualifying as individu- als from a non-advancing team for Saturday's region- al meet were North Knox sophomore Brittany Page; Tecumseh senior Payge Le- men; Tecumseh senior Sum- mer Moore; North Daviess sophomore Abigail Giesler; North Daviess senior Lilly VanderMel; North Daviess senior Emily Remsburg; North Knox freshman Macy Dye; North Daviess junior Alandra Brineger; Wash- ington sophomore Audrey Helms; and Tecumseh soph- omore Gracie Gogel. Saturday's regional meet will begin at 10 :30 a.m. Ad- mission will be $5 per per- son. The top five teams and the top 10 individuals from non-advancing teams will advance to the semi- state meet hosted by Brown County.
