Harvest Faire & steam Festival Kinetic Steam Works and Roaring Camp Railroads co-sponsor the annual Steam Festival, which will be Saturday and Sunday, Sept 30-Oct. 1 at Roaring Camp, occurring along- side the annual Harvest Faire. e Faire has been held for more than 30 years, and the steam festi- val was added in 2013. It works "to preserve and promote steam pow- ered heritage, artifacts, and technologies through the restoration of vintage steam engines." ey provide a unique display of steam-powered gad- gets and equipment that attendees look forward to viewing each year. Most of the exhibit is located inside Roaring Camp's Bret Harte Hall, an 1880s- style building, while some equipment is placed directly outside the hall because of size or physi- cal requirements. Past exhibits have included items like player pianos. "It can be an oddball collection—in a good way, lots of funky objects, and it's fun to look at," says Roaring Camp staff member Joanne Hirasaki. One of the exhibit's goals is to showcase "the cre- ativity and imagination of inventors, tinkerers and do-it-yourselfers." All weekend long, there is free admission for the festival and the Faire. At the Faire, there are lots of "Heritage" kids' activi- ties. ese include candle making, gold panning, and scarecrow mak- ing (the latter has a $7 materials fee).
