Jan O'Neill Mobile: (831) 345-1735 CalBRE #01176301 Showcase, REALTORS ® 237 Mt. Hermon Road, Suite A Scos Valley, CA 95066 Thank you sincerely from my heart! A lthough Dr. Jeanne Hofven- dahl didn't always know she wanted to be a chiropractor, from an early age she knew she wanted to help people, and she also was drawn to alterna- tive health and healing. Today, she helps many individuals through her practice, Ben Lomond Integrated Chiropractic & Massage erapy, where she incorpo- rates both chiropractic techniques and massage in her treatments. is is unusual because the most common approach- es used by chiropractic offices, Dr. Hofvendahl says, are either solely chiropractic adjustments or a therapist spending a few minutes doing mas- sage before the doctor arrives to deliver adjust- ments. Dr. Hofvendahl uses specific massage tech- niques such as trigger point therapy or cross- fiber technique in a targeted way to address muscular issues that may affect spinal alignment or cause pain directly. In other words, integrated chiropractic and massage therapy…hence the offi- cial name of her practice. "Especially in this tech age where people are hunched over or key- boarding for staggering amounts of hours, there are trigger points in the shoulder blades, upper shoulders and forearms that cause chronic and severe pain," says Dr. Hofvendahl. "People are oen surprised that they are 30 to 80 percent better in a few visits," she adds. "e severe pain makes them think the answer can't be as simple as muscular trigger points." Visits are usually 45 minutes long, and she is hands-on the entire time. She also offers Swedish massage sessions (60, 90 or 120 minutes). "A new favorite session is called a Combination. I do a Swedish massage and ten minutes of ultra-sound on the most bothersome trigger points, followed by adjustments at the end of the massage." is is ideal for regular patients who don't have any acute issues, but need a brief "tune-up" and are also looking for the benefits and pleasure of a full massage. In addition to massage, she utilizes deep heat packs and therapeutic ultra-sound to reduce the trigger points and tension. As much as Dr. Hofvendahl likes working with people, she also works hard to get to a place where they don't need her anymore. "Aer the initial visit I usually begin teaching stretches and strengthen- ing exercises and giving postural/ergonomic advice to prevent the issues from returning," says Dr. Hofvendahl. "It's my goal for people to be able to maintain their own health. I use a variety of techniques to get you well and to keep you well." When she was younger, she first thought about social work or psychol- ogy as a career. en, when she was 19, she was working as a nurse's aide and saw a chiro- practor for the first time. "He was amazing. I immediately thought, 'I want to do that' and then thought, I can't do that because I can't do scienc- es," says Dr. Hofvendahl. "at was a common thought for women of my generation." She be- gan doing part time mas- sage therapy and work- ing in special education. A friend mentioned how much her chiropractor helped and she thought, "I can do that." She looked at taking chem- istry, organic chemistry and physics and got an A in the first class she took. From there, she says, it was easy. "I'm grateful that my limited sense of my ability didn't stop me and I hope that young women now don't have limited ideas of their abilities." Dr. Hofvendahl has lived in Ben Lomond for 30 years. She first served patients under the name Ben Lomond Chiroprac- tic in 1993; at the time, she shared office space with Dr. Steve Young at Young Chiropractic in Ben Lomond. Back then, she had three young sons and worked part-time. Now that her sons are 20, 21 and 27, she was able to open her practice full-time in 2011 and she Eliminating Pain With Points and Pleasure by Tara Fatemi Walker Santa Cruz Mountain Sol Festival photo by Joshua Huver Dr. Jeanne Hofvendahl, Ben Lomond Integrated Chiropractic and Massage Therapy Photos contributed CONTINUES ON PG. 6 San LorEnzo VaLLEy CHaMBEr oCToBEr EVEnTS MORE INFO AT: www.slvchamber.org/events Mountain Parks annual Lobster Feed Fundraiser Hammer Marcum awards Downtown Merchants Trick or Treating Thomas the Tank Engine Halloween Party at roaring Camp Big Trees Scottish Gathering & Highland Games
