Santa Cruz Mountain Sol FeStival e fourth annual Santa Cruz Mountain Sol Fes- tival takes place Saturday and Sunday, Sept 23-24, at Roaring Camp Mead- ows. e popular two- day music festival runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day and includes a beer and wine garden, food and booths with merchandise for sale. Michael Horne and Ste- phen Wyman launched Sol Fest in 2014. Horne has been producing and promoting live music in Santa Cruz for over 30 years; he has done more than 3,000 shows! Wyman, a Felton local, is a restaurateur. He co-owns Surfrider Café. He founded and ran the Boulder Creek Brewery and Café for more than a quarter-century, until a devastating fire de- stroyed the business in 2015. Horne and Wyman work hard all year long, with a goal of bringing top-tier national and international talent to Santa Cruz. Past per- formers include Sheila E., G Love & Special Sauce, Angélique Kidjo, George Clinton and Par- liament/Funkadelic, and Rodney Crowell. "Sol is an intimate festival," says Wyman. "Everyone is relatively close to the stage. We're the opposite of these mega festivals where you're most likely to see the show on a distant video screen. Sol has a real Santa Cruz commu- nity feel." Michael Franti is head- lining this year, and other participating musicians include e Wailers and Cyrille Nev- ille & Swampfunk. Franti also performed in 2015; attendee Sharon de Jong says, "he was spectacular. He got the whole crowd holding hands for peace and dancing." Since the festival's inception, diehard fan de Jong has attended both days every year from start to finish. "I simply move in for the weekend," she says. "It is such a great venue, and I always dance for hours. It's my favorite music festival. I like nothing more than enjoying phenomenal music with our beautiful commu- nity. ere are awesome clothing and jewelry vendors too." Two-time attendee Kimber Ashley agrees wholeheartedly. She fondly remembers amazing fish tacos from Boulder Creek's Blue Sun Café, and seeing lots of friends. "Its a wonderful family festival with lots of local yummy food and booths with cloth- ing and cool stuff," says Ashley. "You can watch families play Frisbee and blow bubbles, all the while enjoying great music. ere are multiple stages, which allow you to choose the music vibe you want, with plenty of room to dance and twirl," she adds. Festival attendance has grown each year. In 2014, there were about 3,000 people across the two days. ere were about 5,000 in 2016, and Wyman hopes for 2,500- 3,000 people per day this year. e audience is mostly adults, he says, but kids are welcome. Wyman estimates that about several hundred of each day's attendees are kids. Children 10 and under are free with paid adults and there is a kids' area with cras. ere's also a discount for indi- viduals ages 11-17 when purchased with adult tickets (will call only, and parents/guardians must accompany youth to enter the fest). roaring Camp roars With activities this Fall by Tara Fatemi Walker K A S E Y & B R O O K E H I N C H M A N 2013 & 2015 SALES ASSOCIATES OF THE YEAR 831.239.3708 CalBRE 01424163 & 01445065 Kaseyandbrooke.com Own a piece of artistic modern architecture.
