Give us a call: 812-354-8500 Heartland Half Marathon giving cash prizes This year's Heartland Half Marathon preparations are underway as the sixth an- nual event is scheduled to take place during Labor Day Weekend on Saturday, Sept. 2. The events will once again include a half marathon, 5K, and team challenge, along with cash prizes for the top three finishers in both male and female divisions for the half marathon. The races will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the shadow of the Jas- per Train Depot in Jasper, along the banks of the Pato- ka River, and will finish in the shade along the same riv- er just a stone's throw away. This scenic course takes half marathon runners along a hilly route through commer- cial and residential neighbor- hoods with challenging peaks midway through the race. The 5K starts and ends in the same location as the half marathon, but splits to take a different course close to the start of the race. The routes once again merge during the last leg of the race, which take runners along the scenic Jas- per Riverwalk. The team challenge is a re- lay comprised of a four-per- son team and follows the same course as the Heartland Half Marathon. The first runner in the relay will travel 3.8 miles, then pass along his/her tim- ing chip to the second runner. The second runner will then run 4.05 miles and pass along the chip. The third runner will run 2.5 miles, and final runner finishes off with the remain- ing 2.75 miles. The registration fee for the half marathon is $ 60 if regis- tered by Aug. 13. A fter Aug. 13, cost for the half marathon is $70. The 5K and team chal- lenge registration fee is $25 per person. Pre-registrants will receive a technical shirt, and the first 500 half marathoners to pre- register will also receive a special race gift. Registration can be completed online at ra- ceroster.com or at heartland- halfmarathon.com. For anyone interested in training with others in prepa- ration for the Heartland Half Marathon, the Southern Indi- ana Wolfpack, based in Jasper, sponsors a free training pro- gram every Sunday morning beginning at 7 a.m. in front of the Jasper Fire Station, locat- ed at 309 East Sixth Street. Each workout begins with ba- sic stretching, plus a few short core drills prior to beginning the run/walk route. There are no pace requirements for this training group, as partic- ipants are free to run/walk at their own pace. The Heartland Half Mara- thon, 5K and Team Challenge is being coordinated by DC Multisport, a non-profit orga- nization dedicated to promot- ing health and wellness while giving back to local commu- nities. Lodging information and race-day event volunteers are being coordinated by the Dubois County Visitors Cen- ter staff. The event corporate sponsor is Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. The majority of the pro- ceeds from this year's race will be given to the Phillip R. Dawkins Heart & Vascu- lar Center at Memorial Hos- pital to be utilized for new in- tegrative medicine services provided to cardiac patients. Ten percent of the proceeds will go towards the DC Mul- tisport Endowment to ensure future stability of the organi- zation and to continue in its efforts to give towards wor- thy causes.
