Pike County Economic Development Corporation by Ashley Willis Project updates One of Otwell's own showing God's love in Honduras By Kenzie Rudolph It is always great to hear about young people doing God's work, but when it is someone from your town, you cannot help but feel a sense of pride. Otwell's own Sydney Dame, 2017 Pike Central graduate, came out of her comfort zone this sum- mer to spend four weeks interning at Faith Home in Honduras. Dame had a love for the coun- try of Honduras from an early age after hearing stories from her fa- ther, Stephen Dame, about his trips there. "As I got older, you could say go- ing to Faith Home was on my buck- et list," said Dame. Dame visited Faith Home three different times before embarking on her sole journey this summer. She heard about the possibility of an internship on her second trip and decided that it was something she wanted to do. She said she was excited to see all of the children at Faith Home again, but she was also nervous about being away from her fami- ly for so long. When lonely on her trip, Dame found strength that on- ly God is capable of providing. "Many times when I would be feeling homesick, a child would tell me that they loved me, or would bring me flowers to the school. I believe those were little signs from God telling me I was right where I was supposed to be." While interning in Honduras, Dame experienced things both good and bad. One of her best ex- periences was spending a weekend with the director of Faith Home. She learned so much more about Faith Home and the children there and was very humbled after doing a rice and beans distribution in a local neighborhood close to Faith Home. Riding in a hot, overpacked van was not a good experience and she did not enjoy the nine-hour layover in JFK airport in New York, but she quickly learned how privileged she was to live in America. "The people of Honduras long to live here and many times we take that for granted," said Dame. She is fulfilling her dream of going to Oakland City Universi- ty, where she will be studying ele- mentary education. Working with the children at Faith Home was a valuable experience for the field that she is desiring. Dame said, "I have only ever heard good things about OCU and decided at a young age it was my dream school." Many of her family members, in- cluding her dad, graduated from OCU. She attended events and bas- ketball games there while growing up and now she will be a freshman this fall. When it comes to someone thinking about going on a mission trip, Dame has some advice. It can be very costly, but there are always ways to get help, like through family, friends and churches for example. When it comes to safety, Dame said it is im- portant to find a reliable company to go through, like General Baptist International Missions, or GBIM. "Just go! If you ever get the op- portunity to go to a third world country on a mission trip, go! " she excitedly exclaimed.
