Meanwhile, soy- beans with a variety of planting dates have been sprayed across the Mid- west lately, with notable results. A lot of replant corn had a rough time with the dry weather we experienced of late. Thankfully, Trop- ical Storm Cindy, not ev- er to be confused with my wife Cindy, even af- ter the honeymoon in Ja- maica, left enough precip- itation to restore growth and favorable tempera- tures. The replant corn is well on its way to that Gibson County Fair tassel time we remember fond- ly. Meanwhile, favorable conditions for early plant- ing of corn has some fields well into pollination and taking full advantage of the cooler June tempera- tures. A quick stop for a note on reproductive stages in corn is warranted. Corn tassels before it silks, with the male pollen on the tas- sel emerging from the tip of the plant before the fe- male silks emerge from the ear husks to receive the pollen from the tas- sels. This year will be a great one for prolonging the time during which pol- len will be shed, great for withstanding a few days of adverse pollinating con- ditions but less favorable for those with allergies to corn pollen. To estimate when some of the later planted or re- planted corn may reach silking without constant monitoring of the field, analysis of Growing De - gree Day Tool from the Useful 2 Usable initiative is worthwhile. The tool, now available at mrcc. isws.illinois.edu/U2U/ gdd/, uses the weather experienced to this point in the year, along with the planting date and maturi- ty rating of the hybrid, to estimate silking date. With near term precipi- tation outlooks looking above average for our ar- ea, and the penchant for late season fungal out- breaks the last few years, accurate estimation of the silking date also allows for potential planning of fun- gicide applications, keep- ing in mind that weather conditions and outlooks should favor fungal devel- opment to warrant a spray. More informa- tion on grow- ing degree days is available at "Heat Unit Con- cepts for Corn," a Bob Nielsen article updated this growing season. Soybeans de- serve mention as poste- mergence sprays of her- bicide have finished up or will be doing so in the next week or two. Drift concerns remain at the forefront this time of year. All eyes seem to be on Ar- kansas, one state that de- cided Xtendimax would not be allowed but did register Engenia, both forms of dicamba for di - camba-tolerant soybean varieties. On June 14, one University of Arkan- sas Extension article en- titled "Dicamba Drift Complaints Up Sharply in 2017," reported over 50 drift complaints filed as of that date, with 32 report- ed in the entire 2016 year. A Farm Journal article, "Dicamba Ban Hangs in Limbo," claims over 200 reports filed as of a week later, June 21. The former article also understands the complexities of irony, as they note that a Univer- sity of Arkansas study on dicamba drift and volatil- ity had to be abandoned as the field scale trial was prematurely damaged by external dicamba drift. Meanwhile, outside of Arkansas, we have the same and other herbicides that need very careful exe- cution in order to control weeds without damag- ing neighboring vegeta- tion. Also, if we could stop throwing the highly dead- ly herbicide paraquat into drinking water bottles and trying to sell them, in what a better world we might reside. For more in- formation on that stupidi- ty only a couple of coun- ties away, head over to the advisory notice at www. purdue.edu/newsroom/ releases/2017/Q2/indi- ana-state-chemist-issues- paraquat-advisory.html. For more information on why we just cannot have nice things, contact Hans at the Purdue Extension office at 812-385 -3491, ext. 103, or hschmitz@ purdue.edu.
