"All my life I have tried to give back to the community," says Berkowitz. He volunteered a few hours at the Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland County (BGCCC) and was soon asked to join the organization's board of directors. "If you spend an afternoon at the Club interacting with the kids, you are hooked," he says. "You realize that you are making a difference in the lives of kids who really need help." An avid golfer, it wasn't long before Berkowitz, who is the founder and owner of Carolina Chiropractic Plus in Shelby, made what he found to be a surprising discovery about Cleveland County. "I realized that there were very few golf tournaments for fundraisers in this area, and I realized how many golfers there are in Cleveland County," he says. "I saw it as a win-win for the Club and golfers." Over the next 20 years, Berkowitz and the golf committee, made up of board members Bill Chambless, Jim Longbon, Bob Bullock, Susan Allen, Faye Burton, Mabel Froneberger, Jack Weller and Coach Ed Peeler, raised more than $230,000 for the club, and the golf tour- nament is still going strong. This year the BGCCC decided to name the tournament after the man who first had the idea to get it started. The tournament this year is being held at Deer Brook Golf Course, located at 201 Deer Brook Drive, Shelby. Dr. Rich Berkowitz, right, recognizes Lowes store manager Harry Dixon, left, for the "Total Effort Award" at last year's Boys & Girls Club golf tournament. This year the tournament was renamed in honor of Berkowitz. "This event is one of the most popular fundraisers in the local golfing community," says Deer Brook Golf Professional Derrick Dellinger. "We are especially proud to host the 21st Rich Berkowitz Boys & Girls Club Golf Classic. Naming the tournament in honor of Dr. Rich is the right thing to do for all of his years of service." This year's tournament will be held May 10, 2017. Registration and lunch start at noon, and the "Shot Gun Start" is at 1 p.m. Sponsorship oppor- tunties for the tournament range from $100 (for a hole sponsorship) to $2,500 (for a lead event sponsorship). For more information about spon- sorships or to register for the tournament, call the BGCCC at 704-471-2582, visit www.bgcclevelandcounty.org or search for "Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland County" on Facebook. Dr. Berkowitz announces the rules at the 2016 Boys & Girls Club golf tournament. Faye Burton, right, checks in the golf- ers at last year's Boys & Girls Club golf tournament. Golfers gather on the practice green to get instructions at the 2016 Boys & Girls Club golf tournament.
