BURNS (6-0 overall / 3-0 in the conference) Ron Greene Stadium was rocking last Friday night thanks to an undefeated Burns football team, homecoming, and a win over East Burke 42-6. Entering that game, the Bulldogs were ranked 10th in the State 3A poll. Burns Quarterback Cameron Barbee really shined in this one after putting up passing numbers - 8 of 13 for 236 yards – to go with 77 rushing yards and two touchdowns. One of his runs to the end zone was a 13-yard option play. Those passing scores, included a 24-yard strike to Bjay Hopper in the fi rst half. In the second half, Barbee found Dontay Jones on a 27-yard touchdown pass. It was fun for the home crowd to see their quarterback, at times, in an empty backfi eld set (spread offense), which has been different from recent season Burns formations. Runningback Aaron Hill was back in action and looked good carrying the football. He actually replaced defense and offensive weapon Magale Burris, who came out of the game due to an elbow injury. In all, the Bulldogs had over 300-yards total offense. Maddog Pride (referring to Burns) heads into another SMAC (South Mtn. Athletic Conference) game this Friday when they travel to East Rutherford. In 2015, the two teams went down to the wire. At the end of the third quarter, tied 14 all, E. Rutherford went up 21-14 with under 7 minutes to go in the game. Burns answered with a touchdown in the fi nal minute of the game but went for a 2-point conversion that came up short – thus East won 21-20. CREST (4-1 overall / 1-0 in the SMAC) After losing their season opener at South Point, the Crest Chargers have now won four in a row after knocking off R-S Central last Friday 23-14. Crest was home at Sid Bryson Stadium for Homecoming 2016. Congrats to this year's Homecoming Queen, Kendall Cudd. The Charger's had a huge touchdown in the early moments of the game, when Devion Pryor ran 66-yards in to the end zone. However, R-S Central came right back with their own touchdown and took the lead, 7-6, when their kicker booted through the PAT. The Chargers got it going through the air in the second quarter and took back the lead for good – when QB Peyton Kemmerlin hit top receiver Tyshun Odom on a short 5-yard touchdown pass. This was the end result of a good looking over 70-yard offensive series down the fi eld. Speaking of Kemmerlin, one of two quarterbacks (the other Cameron Peeler) the Chargers rely on, also had a rushing touchdown that extended the lead to 20-7. Crest Kicker Evan Davis hit the point after on those 2nd and 3rd touchdowns of the game and then added some extra breathing-room with a 37-yard fi eld goal in the second half. Central would get no closer than the fi nal of 23 to 14. The Chargers continue SMAC play this Friday with a visit to Chase. Last season, the defending 3A State Champs wore down the Trojans defense with a solid running game on their way to a 27-12 victory. Also, congratulations to Crest defenders Justin Foster, linebacker, and DeQuandre Wilson, corner, for being named to this year's NC team at the 2016 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. Last year's Golden Lions took it to EB 62-22. Shelby had eight touchdown passes in that game, which was played on a Monday night due to bad weather the Friday before. Observers that night stated that Shelby's defense did a great job wrap- ping up and tackling East Burke's running attack. Last but not least, congratulations to Senior Wide-Receiver Jayden Borders for being selected to play for North Carolina's team in the 2016 Shrine Bowl to be played in Spartanburg at the end of the season in December. KINGS MOUNTAIN (3-3 overall / 1-2 in the conference) The 2016 edition of the Battle of Buffalo Creek was played at Pearly Allen Field on the campus of Shelby High, where the Lions stayed unbeaten on the sea- son with a 39-9 win over South Mountain Athletic Conference foe and county rival Kings Mountain. The Mountaineers actually got off to a good start with a couple of drives inside the Shelby 10 yard line. However, missed opportunities took away from possible touchdowns after miscues on snaps caused them to lose yardage. On one of those series, Kings Mountain did get a just over 30-yard fi eld goal from their kicker Micah Randall. Shelby's passing attack was hot early in the contest, as Quarterback Malik Sarratt connected on a 43-yard touchdown pass to Darius Fuller. Soon to follow were rushing touchdowns by Sarratt (5-yards) and Jwan Sims (1-yard). Golden Lions Kicker Ethan Triplett converted four extra point attempts throughout the game, as well as a 33-yard fi eld goal. Sarratt also hooked up with Maleek McCullens on a 17-yard pass before halftime. Shelby had the game well in hand at the half with a 30 to 3 lead. In the third quarter, Sarratt added another touchdown on his own with a quarterback keeper of 8-yards. Shelby's defense did their part as usual, with the always reliable Dax Hollifi eld leading the way with nine solo tackles, including four tackles for loss of yardage. The Lions D even brought down Kings Mountain's Jaylon Wade in the end zone to add a safety (2-points) as their fi nal score of the night. Kings Mountain will have a chance to prove they are still a worthy and talented op- ponent for fellow SMAC members when they host Draughn this Friday. The Mountaineers had their way when the two teams met last season, winning easily 49 to 9. A victory gets KM back above 500 on the year and would even their SMAC record.
