Quaint Notebook Describes North Carolina Deaths The typesetter should get a medal if he (or she) can set the following entry correctly: "Wm Davis age 100.8 dide oc 5 1841. wre old Solder in rev wre and got his thie brok in laste fite at king mounte . he was farmer and made brandy and never had Drunker in famly." entry in the book of deaths kept by Jacob Carpenter from 1841 to 1915. Today the same obituary might simply read: "Died Oct. 5, 1841: William Davis, age 108, Revolutionary War soldier who broke his thigh at the battle of King's Mountain; farmer and sober distiller." Somehow, though, the flavor gets lost in the modern translation. Only punctuation has been added in this first wrote that Charley had four "wimin" and forty-two children, all of whom went to preaching together and got along "smoth". To feed them, Charley made brandy and killed from seventy-five to eighty hogs a year. "Uncle Jake" Carpenter lived in Three Mile Creek near Crossnore in Avery County. His house was two miles up the gap from the main road, and he was familiar with all the families in that region of the mountains. Each time someone died, he wrote down the facts, adding his personal comments --- sometimes favorable to the deceased, sometimes not. Later he recopies the entries into a daybook. He died in 1920 at the age of eighty-seven. Some years ago Denise M. Abby, with the aid of Mary M. Sloop and Theron Dellinger, prepared a typed copy of the " anthology of death", and recent- ly Dr. Chalmers G. Davidson of Davidson College contributed to the North Carolina Collection at Chapel Hill. The quaint item is valuable as the only register of deaths in Avery County for the nine- teenth century. Nearly every record evokes a smile from the reader. The wife of Franky Davis, for instance, died in 1842, and Uncle Jake noted that she had had the "nirv" to fight wolves all night to save her calf. According to him, she "throade fier chonks to save caff" at a campsite. Six years later Ben Blalock, age forty, was "cild June 5 by tree cot far conny." Translated, that meant that Ben ran the wrong way when he chopped down a tree to get at a coon. Old Charley Kiney, died in 1852 at age seventy- two, must have been quite a fellow. Uncle Jake Soonsy Ollis, who died in 1871, must have been the greatest hunter in the area. He was said to have killed deer, turkeys and rattlesnakes by the hun- dreds. Henry Barrier apparently was the champion bear hunter, though. Abraham Johnson died in 1881 at the age of about 107. A farmer and opera- tor of an iron forge, he was said to have loved liquor but "never wars drunk in his days." Steven Buckanon was described as a "precher babus --- that is, a Baptist preacher. Samuel Hoskins was called a "grate lier". Of his own father by the same name, Carpener wrote proudly that he was a farmer and cooper who made hogsheads and brandy. He lived to be eighty-six, raised twelve children and never had to see a doctor. In 1859 Mary Diling was killed in a mill when her dress was caught around the shaft. Carpenter had to help pull here body out. Nine years later Peggy Wise, "granny womin," died. Young Joseph Carpenter was killed in 1862. What more poetic tribute could there be to the young soldier than this: "hey fot for his countery los his lif." Perhaps the most touching entry in the little book of deaths is that concerning Margaret Carpenter, who died at eighty-seven in 1875. According to Uncle Jake, Margaret was so poor as a child that she had no bed on which to sleep hav- ing instead to use a deerskin until she got married. No woman, he proudly noted, had to sleep on deer- skins after she got married.
