Carrie Bel- lamy gave the treasurer's re- port. There being no further business the meeting was turned over to Lou Wyne for the program. Since the meeting fell the day after Mother's Day, Mrs. Wyne decided to tell us a little of the history of how Mother's Day came to be. Anna lobbied prominent businessmen and politicians to support her campaign to create a special day to hon- or mothers. In 1914 Anna's hard work paid off when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday. As with so many holidays, Anna felt that over the years the day's sentiment was be- ing sacrificed at the expense of greed and profit. In 1923 she filed a lawsuit to stop a Mother's Day festival, and was even arrested for dis- turbing the peace at a con- vention for a war mother's group. Before her death in 1948, Jarvis is said to have confessed that she regret- ings, Mother's Day has flourished in the United States. The second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year to dine out, and telephone lines record their highest traffic, as sons and daughters ev- erywhere take advantage of this day to honor and ex- press appreciation of their mothers.
