B-6 Wednesday, June 6, 2012 All aboard at Gospel Center The Press-Dispatch What's new at your library? took a joy ride in the train at Gospel Center's Promise Express Vacation Bible School. Come ride along 9 a.m. till noon this week June 4-8. Ava Aaserud, Gracie Pauw and Kayla Lamar about George Washing- ton in the Consumerist. It starts out by saying George was "just as bad as the rest of us". It seems that the first President checked out two books: "Law of Nations" and "Common Debates, Vol. 12" on Octo- ber 5, 1789 (this was care- fully noted in the ledger of the New York Society Li- brary), but there is no in- dication that they were re- turned on the November 2, 1789 due date. In fact, there is no indica- I just read an article By Ginger Rogers ride in the train at Gospel Center's Promise Ex- press Vacation Bible School. Serenity Fulcher and Ava Sturgeon took a joy in the train at Gospel Center's Promise Express Vacation Bible School. Justus Edrington and Kota Sutt took a joy ride was a cartoon tacked to the staff bulletin board that had a librarian (recognizable by the grey hair in a bun, glasses on her nose, long granny dress and sensible shoes, of course) stand- ing at someone's door de- manding that a book be re- turned, gun in hand. We're not that desperate to get books back. But the truth is: it's to your benefit to return REAL ESTATE HARRIS Featured ProPerty oF the week 9207 S State Road 61, Oakland City A charming 3 or 4 bedroom brick walk-out with a wraparound porch, two car attached garage, a huge 48' x 40' pole barn, along with a separate 24' x 11' one car garage all nestled on six acres between Coe and Spurgeon. The house has been tastefully remodeled with just the right accents. MLS#188366 $229,900 tion that they were returned at all, and since the library (still functioning, but at a different location) has the entire Common Debates se- ries, except for Volume 12, the shocking conclusion is that President Washing- ton may have been just as careless as the rest of us about returning his library books. Head Librarian Mark Bartlett joked that the fines would be to the tune of around $300,000 by now, but they would be happy just to get the books back. At our old library there Evergreen Consortium (through which we can get materials for you from all over the state), we on- ly charged a nickel a day for over due fines. But Ev- ergreen has its own rules. Patrons are now charged a quarter a day for over due books. It doesn't take very many days for a stack of books to add up to a few dollars worth of fines. Even so, most of our patrons cheerfully pay their quarter a day fines without a fuss. The problems come in, books in a timely manner. Before we joined the because we recently, out of curiosity ran a report on the amount owed to the library for overdue items. The number is absolutely shocking. We could buy a brand new library van with the amount owed. It was so surprising that we're go- ing to run it again just to be sure. Unlike the classic Sein- generally, when materi- als are not returned. If a books is missing for 45 days, the Evergreen sys- tem considers it lost, and now charges a $10 process- ing fee for the many jobs involved in the attempts to retrieve and/or replace a missing book (overdue no- tices, reordering, re-cata- loging, re-processing the book, etc.). And of course, the patron would need to also pay the price of repur- chasing the item. Just one book not re- turned after 45 days would add up to $11.25 in overdue fees, the $10.00 processing fee, and the price of the book. Even an inexpensive paperback book could add up to over $30.00 in fees. But, like the Head Librar- ian at the New York Society Library, we really just want the books back. If a book is returned, we forgive the $10 processing fee, there is no need to pay to replace the item, and your abili- feld episode where Jerry had not returned a book he checked out in high school, we do not have a Library Cop. So for now, we'll leave it up to you: If there is a missing book or outstanding fine on your re- cord, take care of it. President Washington had many admirable attri- butes, but in this case, we'd prefer you follow President Lincoln's example, he's the guy who reportedly walked over 20 miles to return some books he borrowed. Now who wouldn't forgive a fine in that case? Summer Reading began this week include: Preschool story time to- Kids begins at 10 a.m. at Petersburg.
